Liverpool news: Reds face stumbling block as £27.2m deemed too much for star

It is no secret that Liverpool are eyeing a potential transfer for Bayern Munich’s star, Thiago Alcantara. The midfielder has been one of the Bavarian team’s best performers and has intrigued Jurgen Klopp as well.

Not only that but we’ve heard whispers that the deal is reportedly really close to being finalised, so much so that the length of the contract and some other details were revealed as well. However, there’s another twist in the story.

The ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano reported for The Guardian that Liverpool are refusing to pay the asking price of €30m (£27.2m) and this is the only stumbling block they will face in their attempt to bring the 29-year-old to the Premier League.

Even though he has just one year left on his contract, Bayern are still reluctant to let him go unless they are properly reimbursed for their star player. Of course, we have to remember that the German outfit are still in the Champions League and the deal will likely have to be put on hold until their ventures in Europe are first sorted.

Thiago himself is keen on the move and is now waiting for his club to soften their stance and let him make the transfer. As things currently stand, however, Klopp doesn’t want to spend more than he absolutely has to.

Only time will tell how will that affect this deal.

Verdict

The Spaniard might be 29 already but even with that taken into account, £27.2m still feels like a proper bargain for one of the best midfielders in world football. Of course, it is also true that he only has a year left on his contract but it’s difficult to expect Bayern to lower their asking price even further.

Maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea for the Reds to just accept these terms and get themselves an incredible signing.

Everton: Fans slam Paolo Di Canio as he claims that Carlo Ancelotti is overrated

Loads of Everton fans have been slamming Paolo Di Canio as he made some remarks to Il Mattino (via The Gwladys Street)  that suggest that Carlo Ancelotti is overrated.

As per the former Sunderland boss, he claims that the Merseyside club are Ancelotti’s level despite the sheer number of big European giants that the 61-year old has managed at before.

Di Canio also claimed that Ancelotti only took advantage of the mechanisms left by former Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri at Napoli and failed with the Italian team in his second season.

Indeed, Ancelotti was sacked by Napoli earlier on in this campaign as they had not won in nine games in all competitions until a 4-0 home win versus Genk in the UEFA Champions League and left them in seventh place in the Serie A table (via BBC).

However, it is fair to say that the now manager at Goodison Park has had a very successful career in management with the likes of AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Paris Saint Germain and Real Madrid, winning the Champions League three times and having a Premier League and FA Cup under his belt as examples (per Transfermarkt).

Given also that the Toffees have not won a senior men’s major trophy since 1995, and are still able to attract Ancelotti with the kind of CV that he has, these EFC supporters slammed the remarks from Di Canio on Twitter:

Evertonians, are you lucky to have Ancelotti as manager? Comment below!

Remembering Crystal Palace’s shock of all shocks against Liverpool

When Liverpool took on Crystal Palace in the Premier League at Selhurst Park on May 5th 2014, the slip had happened.

Steven Gerrard had lost his balance and handed the initiative to Manchester City in the Premier League title race but the clash in south London gave them an opportunity to put things right, to steady the ship and pull themselves off the canvas and back into title contention.

A reminder of where we were prior to kick-off. There were two games left apiece and Liverpool and Manchester City each had 80 points, though the latter enjoyed a superior goal difference of nine. All four fixtures were against mid-table sides and this was the only one of the quartet that was away from Anfield or the Etihad.

A win was critical. A win was Brendan Rodgers’ base requirement. It would take the Reds three points clear and put serious pressure on their rival.

Only that goal difference picked and picked at their bravado and with the assumption that City would prevail against Aston Villa and West Ham coupled with a sincere belief based on recent experience that they could blow away sides, a victory was almost taken for granted. What Liverpool wanted was to score as close to ten as possible and eradicate City’s advantage in one fell swoop.

Isolation Busters: The only quiz you need to cure your boredem

By half time, chances had been missed but the away side were a goal to the good with Joe Allen cleverly finding space in the box and heading in a Gerrard corner. Eight minutes after the break their lead was doubled as Sturridge scuffed one home and when Suarez fired in his 31st of the season the impossible dream seemed slightly plausible.

“The game is won. Now it’s all about how many Liverpool can score,” the commentator intoned and judging by the Merseysider’s intent the answer could, potentially, have been 10. Liverpool attacked relentlessly, committing men forward at every opportunity as they desperately sought a fourth that could lead to a fifth and from there… Well, who knew?

Palace, though, under Tony Pulis, simply did not give up. It wasn’t in the manager’s nature and having steadied the ship in south London, he made a series of substitutions to capitalise on the wealth of space now appearing in his opponent’s back third.

With ten minutes to go Damien Delany blasted home a long-ranger from out of the blue and Liverpool frankly didn’t know what to do. Do they stick or twist? They furrowed on regardless. Two minutes later Dwight Gayle re-directed a low cross past Mignolet and the Liverpool defence went to panic stations. Three weeks earlier the team, club and fan-base were riding the crest of a wave. Seven days earlier they had been flattened by reality.

Now, having summoned up all of their bellicose belief again they were rocked, yet still ahead. Never before had a team so needed to find a central point of sense and reason.

With a schizophrenic strategy of holding on yet simultaneously ploughing forward perhaps it’s not surprising that Palace pulled off the shock of all shocks, leaving it until two minutes to go before Gayle struck again.

It was a twist that held the nation spellbound.

What happened next?

At the final whistle, Luis Suarez cried.

Manchester City duly went on to win their remaining two games to secure their second Premier League title. For Liverpool, their quest continued.

A point on the final day of the season was sufficient to secure 11th for the Eagles; a pleasing outcome considering they won only once from their opening eleven games.

Liverpool’s Ki-Jana Hoever could solve Jurgen Klopp’s Joe Gomez problem

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In The Pipeline series, which takes a look at some of the most promising young talent either linked with clubs or emerging from their academies…

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Joe Gomez.

There was a time when the 22-year-old was a regular starter for Liverpool. During the 2017/18 season, he made 21 starts in the Premier League for the Reds, with his displays even earning him his first call-up to the England squad at the start of the campaign. However, an ankle injury which led to the former Charlton defender needing surgery has seen him drop down to perhaps the fourth-choice centre-back for Jurgen Klopp, whilst Trent Alexander-Arnold is unlikely to ever be dislodged at right-back.

His lack of playing time – he has started just seven matches in all competitions so far this term – is said to have him considering his future at Anfield, with Arsenal having been linked with his services. Should he depart, he would be a big loss given his versatility – according to Transfermarkt he has played a similar amount of games both at the heart and on the right of the back four – and with Dejan Lovren already 30 and Joel Matip 28, he would be in line to be a regular in the future alongside Virgil van Dijk.

If he were to leave, though, the Reds may already his replacement on their books. Just like Gomez, Ki-Jana Hoever can play in both of those positions, which could see him be a valuable member of the first-team squad in the future.

Even aged just 17, the Netherlands U17 international has already made two appearances for the Merseyside club, and he even scored against MK Dons in the League Cup. Having come through Ajax’s academy, he has a strong pedigree, and he has played regularly for Liverpool’s various youth sides since joining in 2018.

On the international stage, he has already shown that he has what it takes. He started all but one match in the U17 European Championships earlier this year, scoring once and providing two assists, as the Oranje won the tournament. Hoever earned himself a place in the team of the tournament.

He also started all but one of their matches in the U17 World Cup, scoring against Paraguay in the quarter-finals. Those, and many other eye-catching performances, have drawn some top praise from those in the know. Neil Critchley, Liverpool’s U23 coach was shocked by Hoever’s Premier League 2 debut, saying: “Unbelievable. Sixteen years old? Just… wow, really!”

Jurgen Klopp, too, has eulogised about the teenager. He said: “It’s just a joy to watch him. He’s an incredible, confident, young fella and he’s really a good player on top. That we can see him day in, day out is really cool.”

There must be a reason, after all, as to why he has been called the “new van Dijk”. A big comparison to live up to, of course, but if he continues progressing as he has done, then there is no reason why he won’t be able to reach the ceiling of the sport.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans react to this internet leak.

Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi must make major decision

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Matteo Guendouzi doesn’t appear to know what kind of midfielder he wants to be.

On the chalkboard

Arsenal fell to a dispiriting 2-0 defeat to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, leaving them on a four-game winless run in the Premier League.

There are numerous issues with the club but one that stuck out like a sore thumb against the Foxes was Guendouzi.

The Frenchman, it must be said, has been ever-present in the league thus far this term, making 12 out of 12 starts.

He is just 20 and is clearly trusted by his manager, Unai Emery.

Yet he was caught between a rock and a hard place versus Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Per WhoScored, he had 69 touches of the ball, the third-highest of any Gunners player. He clocked a pass completion rate of 94% and completed two dribbles.

Yet he was not played in an attacking midfield role. That was reserved for Mesut Ozil, who played in the hole behind Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Partnered with Lucas Torreira, Guendouzi appeared to be given licence to carry the ball forward but he did not do it with any confidence.

Indeed, he was dispossessed three times, did not complete a tackle, was dribbled past on three occasions and failed to have a shot on goal.

A victim of muddled thinking

This is a problem for Emery to solve.

Lucas Torreira, the defensive-minded player in that midfield, made only one tackle throughout the 90 minutes as Leicester’s power and flair overwhelmed the Gunners.

He was also dispossessed twice.

Thus, making Guendouzi the roaming midfielder, the player able to pick the ball up and run, driving his team forward, seems reckless at best.

He has not been given the proper support network to be able to do it effectively and, really, he needs more help.

Either the youngster is played further forward – probably at the expense of Ozil – or he is coached into a defensive midfielder.

He is young enough and malleable enough for that to be a possibility but, right now, he is neither an attacking nor a defensive midfielder. He must make a decision in the future on what he wants to be.

Birmingham goalkeeper Lee Camp’s mentality is a concern

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

At least he’s had a long time to think about it.

Having put an end to a bit of a bad run of form against Middlesbrough before the international break, it has given parts of the Blues squad the chance to reflect on how things have been going so far this season.

Blues stopper Lee Camp has been talking about the adjustments that the players have had to make under new management and how the team have been adjusting to all the changes:

“The Club’s obviously in a period of transition, the owners and the board want to play a different way and there are different demands on the team this year. There are going to be teething problems and a little bit of uncertainty when you are trying to change a style of play and it all takes time and practise and repetition.”

Later on, he spoke about the victory against Boro and what gave them the motivation to pull out the win:

“We were told it was one of the only games in the world being shown live so all eyes would be watching and at home you want to put in a performance and make the place as much as a fortress as possible.”

One thing that should be a concern about his words is the fact that he mentions the eyes of the world is enough to motivate them to put in an extra performance. Surely they shouldn’t need that sort of motivation to perform just because they are on TV.

If that is the only thing that is getting Birmingham players motivated and willing to perform, the fact that they don’t want to find themselves shown up on TV as it were, then there is a serious problem off the pitch that really needs to be addressed.

In the grand scheme of things, something as little as that shouldn’t have such a big say on the mentality of a player.

It’s also interesting to note that at no time during the interview did he speak about his own errors in the games against Derby County and Wigan Athletic.

As we have noted before on Football FanCast, they have started to creep into his game and he needs to sort them out before he can really start talking about the rest of his teammates.

In theory, Camp should be motivated by his mistakes alone. If we consider the goalkeeper in isolation, that should be enough to make him improve, not the mere presence of a TV camera.

It’s a classic mantra that some players often perform better when they’re on television but it’s perhaps a questionable statement from the ‘keeper.

Spurs fans urge Moussa Sissoko to back up his quotes

Tottenham Hotspur fans have urged Moussa Sissoko to back up his words after he claimed that the club can come through their recent poor form.

Spurs have won just three of their opening 10 Premier League games and already sit eight points behind both Leicester City and Chelsea, in third and fourth respectively.

Sissoko has told the club’s official website, however, that he believes the players have the ability to improve as the season progresses.

He said: “Sometimes it can be like this and we have to work our way through it, stick together and I’m sure good things will follow soon.”

Fans, though, have grown tired of hearing such proclamations from players.

Indeed, Spurs have not won away from home since January and are already facing the prospect of playing catch-up to the top four.

And supporters believe that the France international, who signed for Spurs for £30m in 2016, and his team-mates need to focus more on their on-field displays instead of their off-field quotes, as they prepare to take on Everton at Goodison Park this weekend.

Barcelona fans are gushing over Arthur Melo

Barcelona had a successful night in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Catalans welcomed a red-hot Inter Milan to Camp Nou and after a tough fixture, they ended up with a 2-1 victory.

It wasn’t plain sailing, however, as they went 1-0 down in the opening couple of minutes and the Nerazzurri looked dangerous throughout the game. But some Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi magic did the trick and Barcelona recorded their first win of the group stage.

But it was actually Arthur Melo, their young midfielder, who was praised by many fans after the clash.

Barcelona posted some incredible stats that Arthur accumulated throughout the game and it’s safe to say that many of the Cules were simply in awe of their “best midfielder” at the club.

Some even mentioned Xavi Hernandez and compared Arthur to him, saying the legendary Barcelona midfielder himself would be proud.
