Chapple gives Lancashire fight chance

ScorecardAt 114 for 6, just four runs ahead and four second-innings wickets left Lancashire looked dead and buried soon after lunch on the third day of their match against Sussex. But then the worm – or the tail – turned. Their last four wickets added 171 runs and gave the home side a small chance of seizing a remarkable victory on the final day.Gary Keedy, the night-watchman, drove the fourth ball of the day handsomely through the covers for four. It was not a foretaste of what was to come. Within fifteen minutes both overnight batsmen were gone. The high-scoring opener, Paul Horton, was caught on the crease as he pushed at a ball from Robin Martin-Jenkins, and caught at the wicket for 6. Keedy did not score again, though he did try; in his position his team would have preferred him to stick around and hold up an end, instead of which he chose the wrong ball from Jason Lewry to attack, and was yorked. Lancashire, already trailing on first innings by 110 runs, were now 14 for 3.However, the two new batsmen, Iain Sutcliffe and Stuart Law, seemed to encounter few problems. They looked untroubled as they settled in, and Sutcliffe played a couple of delightful off-side strokes until, with 25 to his credit, he was caught in the gully. The bowler was Ollie Rayner, who put in an impressive spell of offspin, finding considerable turn at times from the helpful pitch.Rayner was thrown the ball before Mushtaq Ahmed, who seemed concerned to avoid putting stress on his knee in the field. Astute batsmen would have tried to target him, but the Lancashire players did not test him too strenuously. When he came on to bowl, he sent down some testing deliveries, and the usual outrageous appeals, but also bowled quite a number of loose balls that initially went unpunished.Immediately after lunch, Faf du Plessis fell, unwisely padding up to an inswinger from Lewry and being adjudged lbw for 15. Steven Croft followed for 7, out to a strange dismissal: he moved outside the off stump to pad up to Rayner, only to find the ball turning more than he expected, and he played on to his stumps via the pad. This was the point where Lancashire were six down for 114.All this time Law had been playing a solid captain’s innings, not trying to dominate but waiting sensibly for the loose ball to dispatch without taking risks. He temporarily hit Mushtaq out of the attack, seizing on three short deliveries to pull to the midwicket boundary and his fifty came off 95 deliveries. At last he found a reliable partner in Luke Sutton and, despite the turning pitch, the pair made batting look a comfortable occupation as they held firm, keeping the score ticking over and playing the percentage game. They added 67 together and looked good for many more, so it was a surprise and disappointment – except to the Sussex team – when Law seemed to lose concentration; uncharacteristically he played a loose drive at Lewry and was easily caught at extra cover for 73. Sutton too followed, on the stroke of tea, to a bat-pad catch for 34, and Sussex regained the initiative at the same time of day as they had almost lost it 24 hours earlier. When it seemed that Lancashire might subside quietly, Glen Chapple and Dominic Cork launched an exhilarating attack on the spinners. Chapple started it, driving two fours off Mushtaq in the same over, and Cork, though taking longer to play himself in, suddenly had Rayner in his sights and hammered him for 18 in an over, including two sixes. He continued his assault, overtaking Chapple and racing to the forties with 13 off Rayner’s next over.Rayner came off, but Chris Adams kept faith with Mushtaq, even though the second new ball was available, and Cork obliged by sending up a huge skyer that was taken at mid-off. The pair had added 78 for the ninth wicket; Cork had made 43 off 36 balls, with two sixes and five fours. This stand effectively ruined Sussex’s chances of winning the match on the third day, which no doubt was their aim if they had read the unfavourable weather forecast for Saturday.Chapple wasn’t finished yet, and he lined up Mushtaq again with some more powerful strokes until he reached his 50, which came off 59 balls. The last pair added a troublesome 26 before Sajid Mahmood was run out backing up, as Lewry got a fingertip from a push back down the pitch by Chapple, to nudge the ball on to the stumps. Usually this is cruel luck for the victim of cricket’s most unfair law, but on this occasion it seemed that Mahmood was simply not paying attention.Chapple was unbeaten with 52, and Sussex now needed 176 to win, a target that could not be achieved in the remaining time on the third day. If at all, as Lancashire would contend. With only a single on the board, Chris Nash was dropped, a hard chance in the gully off Cork, a miss that might prove crucial. Sussex made sure of entering the final day as favourites by keeping all their wickets intact by the close. This match last year was a major turning point in the Championship, and it may well prove to be the same again. If either side wins, it will be a great fillip to their title hopes – but the rain may yet take the honours.

Newcastle keen on Colley

An update has emerged on Newcastle target Omar Colley, regarding Sampdoria’s valuation of the defender…

What’s the talk?

According to SampNews24, as relayed by Sport Witness, Newcastle are one of a number of clubs keeping close tabs on Sampdoria central defender Omar Colley this summer. Fellow Premier League sides Leeds and West Ham are also said to be keen on the enforcer, whose future in Italy is said to be uncertain at this moment in time.

The report claims that Sampdoria’s president, Massimo Ferrero, is unwilling to budge on his valuation and will not allow Newcastle, or anyone else, to negotiate a fee under £8.5m for the centre-back.

Better than Fernandez

Mike Ashley must ensure that he can get a deal over the line for Colley in the coming weeks as he could be a fantastic signing for Steve Bruce’s squad. He would up the quality of the ex-Villa boss’ centre-back options and that could make the £8.5m fee a dream deal for Newcastle.

Federico Fernandez started 24 of Newcastle’s Premier League matches last season and averaged an unimpressive WhoScored rating of 6.64. The 32-year-old was not a weak link in the side or a consistently poor performer, but his displays suggest that the Magpies could improve on his position in the team. He could revert to the role of a back-up and provide strong competition for places, with Bruce knowing that he can come in and do a reliable job when needed.

Colley, however, could come in and be an impressive player at the back. The 28-year-old averaged a superb WhoScored rating of 6.92 in 28 Serie A starts for Sampdoria, which shows that he is a stronger centre-back than Fernandez at the top level. He made 2.3 interceptions per game compared to Fernandez’s 0.7, suggesting that he is able to read the game more effectively than the Argentine.

Therefore, the Sampdoria beast could be a superb signing for Newcastle and good value for money at £8.5m. He is in the peak years of his career, at 28, and has proven himself to be an excellent performer on the pitch. Hopefully, Ashley will be able to oust West Ham and Leeds in the race for his signature and add the towering 6ft 3 powerhouse to Bruce’s squad ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

Pakistan take advantage of missed chances in Bulawayo

As Zimbabwe’s bowling improved, so their fielding declined. A number of missed chances, together with fumbles in the field, during the day allowed Pakistan to take a probably decisive grip on the Second Test match at Queens Sports Club. They finished the day with 295 for five, a lead of 117 over Zimbabwe. The overnight batsmen, Taufeeq Umar and Saleem Elahi, soon made clear their intention of dominating the Zimbabwe bowling. Andy Blignaut was driven powerfully when he overpitched; Raymond Price, who opened with him, was punished whenever he bowled short.Henry Olonga replaced Blignaut, and despite his inaccuracy he did cause the batsmen occasional problems. Still, it came as a surprise when Saleem (27) tried to drive on the off side and dragged a delivery on to his stumps. Pakistan were 63 for one. In Olonga’s next over, Taufeeq (34) went on an uncharacteristically wild swipe outside his off stump and the keeper picked up the catch.Inzamam-ul-Haq looked slightly reckless in his approach, hitting two powerful boundaries but also missing a couple of big hits completely. Then he tried an ambitious pull as Price came over the wicket, and missed to be bowled off stump for 11. All three wickets thus far could be said to be unforced errors.Zimbabwe now began to bowl with new confidence and purpose, while Pakistan similarly seemed to lose theirs. Younis Khan and Yousuf Youhana played with caution and were still there at lunch. The afternoon session may well prove the most decisive in this match. Zimbabwe missed the chance of another wicket soon after lunch, as there was a hopeless mix-up in mid-pitch, only for the ball to be misfielded by substitute Blessing Mahwire, who was replacing Mark Vermeulen who dislocated a finger fielding during the morning. Youhana was nearly bowled by Price when he took an unwise swing at the ball, which missed his stumps by the traditional coat of varnish. After that they settled down to patient accumulation. There were still bad balls, but on the whole the Zimbabwean bowlers were more accurate than they were in Harare. A pity this was effectively countered by poorer catching and ground fielding. Youhana slowly played his way back to form, unveiling some classical smooth strokes. Younis on 46 was dropped at slip by Alistair Campbell, a difficult catch, as soon as Grant Flower came on to bowl, and Zimbabwe were starting to pay for not taking their chances.Younis reached fifty, closely followed by Yousuf, who then survived a very good stumping attempt by Tatenda Taibu, the final result being too close for the third umpire to call, and so the benefit of the doubt went to the batsman. Luck had not gone Zimbabwe’s way during the afternoon, but neither had they made their own luck.Zimbabwe took the second new ball at 195 for three, indicative of the slow Pakistan scoring rate. The ball was not coming on to the bat very sweetly, but Zimbabwe had also bowled quite accurately. Blignaut had a very close lbw decision against Youhana turned down by umpire Venkat, but instead he got Younis (52), who walked right in front of a straight ball. Pakistan were 209 for four, after a partnership of 127.Soon after that Blignaut left the field with a hamstring problem, giving Andy Flower the chance to complete the over, another two balls. Yousuf hit his first ball for four, but he bowls the slow-medium type of delivery that Chris Harris bowls and batsmen in one-day cricket seem to find so difficult to hit. Zimbabwe then missed another chance: Yousuf on 88 skyed a catch to midoff where the culprit was again the unfortunate Mahwire.Olonga then made one: he got a ball to move in off the pitch to hit the off stump of Hasan Raza (4), who unwisely shouldered arms; 225 for five. Kamran Akmal showed his customary aggression from the start, but Yousuf looked rather nervy as he approached his tenth Test century, twice narrowly escaping being run out. It finally took him 198 balls, and he was obliged to the inadequacies of Zimbabwe’s fielders. He celebrated with another dropped catch, low at short cover. Zimbabwe did not get another, and could face another long, hot day in the field tomorrow when Youhana will resume on 116 and Kamran on 27.

When Streak, Blignaut, Hondo, Friend and Olonga are fully fit, who will play out of them? A tricky situation for the selectors, I feel, especially with the racial quota. This would be my final 15.1. How Wishart was selected for the recent one-day series I will never know. He only adds depth to the side. No one has really seen him do an awful lot in international cricket. Carlisle, despite being out of form, adds depth and experience. He has performed on occasions in international cricket and deserves another chance. I sure if Campbell had a lean domestic series he still would have been selected for the series against Pakistan and Kenya.Thanks. What do the other readers think?James Matthews (Australia)DIFFERENCE IN OPINIONReply To Muslim Karimjee from KenyaI don’t mean to sound rude or anything but I think you are just about the most narrow-minded person I have come across. You say that Kenya could beat Zimbabwe. Have you seen the stats? Not once EVER has Kenya beaten Zimbabwe. The last result being of course a stroll in the park for Zimbabwe.I also believe you are mistaken about Kenya being able to thump our A side. If you look at the last year’s series, one draw and one loss doesn’t to me sound like a thumping. If you look at the second `Test’ 199 for 1. That to me doesn’t sound very encouraging for your bowlers. Now you want Test status. Apart from Tikolo and Odumbe you have NO batsmen who would even make a full-strength Midlands team.I don’t mean to sound too negative about Kenyan cricket. I would love to see them gain Test status but not until they can play somewhere near Test standard.Apart from that I would like to know more about Paul Strang. The last time I heard about him he wasn’t bowling leg-spin because of injury. Is that still the case? Is Guy Whittall injured or are the selectors just ignoring him as usual?Sibusiso Nkomani (Belgium)Reply: Paul still hasn’t been able to resume his usual leg-spin. Guy Whittall can bat but is still doubtful for bowling, and this may well be why the selectors have excluded him.KENYA DISAPPOINTINGIn regards to the letter published in the last ZCO newsletter on Kenya in cricket, I believe that Zimbabwe are a lot better team than Kenya and would definitely have beaten Kenya in the First ODI if it hadn’t rained. With due respect Kenya are a good and talented team and may well beatZimbabwe one day, but not too soon in my eyes. They are a strong batting side but lack the bowling they deserves. They need someone to back Martin Suji and at the moment that’s just not happening.Surely there must be better cricketers in Kenya then some of the guys in the team at the moment. In my opinion they should have been given Test status before Bangladesh without a doubt, but because they didn’t I’m sure they will work harder to receive that status and give teams like India, Pakistan and so on a run for their money.Adam Pfeiffer (Australia)THE STATE OF KENYAN CRICKETA couple of points* I did feel you were a little harsh on your comments about Kenya’s current status last week, despite the results against Zimbabwe. In the last two years they seem to have play Sri Lanka A (twice), West Indies, Zimbabwe A & Bangladesh A in first class games. However I agree more matches of this type can only help. It has to be asked what has happened to the plan of the major Test playing nations, sending their `A’ teams to the leading associates each year?* As for Test Status for Kenya, their players deserve to be playing a more regular, higher class of cricket (as do some other individuals from associate nations). However, what is the strength of the their junior system? I’m surprise to see no Kenyan team playing in the Under-17 national South African championships, while both Namibia and Zimbabwe have entered teams. Maybe I’m mistaken or is there a good reason???* Let’s hope that Zimbabwe, Kenya & Nambia can work together (where possible) to raise the standard of cricket in their respective nations and surprise a few in the World Cup.Richard Jones (Australia)

Man City heading for Nmecha disaster

Recent reports have claimed that Lukas Nmecha is set to leave Manchester City this summer, which could be a disastrous decision by Pep Guardiola and Txiki Begiristain.

Nmecha likely to be sold

In a piece for the Manchester Evening News which detailed Lukas’ brother Felix’s exit from the Etihad outfit, it is suggested that the German U21 international is also likely to leave on a permanent deal this summer, after spending last season on loan with Anderlecht.

The £10.8m-rated striker starred in the U21 European Championships this summer as he finished as the top scorer for Germany as they won the trophy, which suggests that he has an extremely bright future, yet City are seemingly keen to cash in on him.

Big mistake by Txiki?

Nmecha was in extremely impressive form for Anderlecht last season, contributing 18 goals and three assists in 37 appearances in the Jupiler Pro League, which helped him average a superb 7.06 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

Given that Guardiola is currently lacking a natural goalscorer in his side for next season following the exit of Sergio Aguero earlier this summer, you would have thought that Nmecha would have been given an opportunity to impress at the Etihad following his form in Belgium last season, yet it seems as if they have already made their mind up on the 22-year-old.

City legend Vincent Kompany, who currently manages Anderlecht, was full of praise for Nmecha last season, saying:

“Of course, he still has room for improvement, but actually he is already a quite complete striker. He does not have any noticeable weaknesses.

“At the moment he is already one of the best strikers in Belgium.”

Although Nmecha has struggled in previous loan spells with the likes of Middlesbrough and Wolfsburg, he clearly made a lot of progress last season and deserves a chance to add to the three appearances he has made in a Manchester City shirt thus far in his career.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936″]

If he is allowed to leave for a minimal fee and continues to impress elsewhere, then this transfer decision might prove to be a disastrous one from Txiki in the future.

Crystal Palace dealt Radu Dragusin blow

A major update has emerged on Crystal Palace target Radu Dragusin regarding where he wants to play his football next season.

What’s the talk?

The Eagles have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of the Juventus centre-back as his agent Florian Manea revealed that the 19-year-old wants to stay with the Italian giants.

Manea has confirmed that Dragusin wishes to remain at Juventus despite offers to join clubs in England and Germany, telling Calcio Mercato, as transcribed by JuveFC:

“He wants to stay at Juventus, he does not want to leave. There have been offers from England and Germany, but he wants to play for Juventus. If you do your best, I believe that in the end you will get to play for Juve.

“If Dragusin does leave, it will just be on loan to get more playing time. But he wants to remain a Juventus player.”

Earlier this year, former Juventus head coach Andrea Pirlo called Dragusin an “interesting” player, telling Gazzetta dello Sport, as transcribed by TekDeeps: “Radu Dragusin did very well, he is a very interesting player who has been training with us for several months. He is a young man of perspective and has already demonstrated his qualities.”

Fans will be gutted

Crystal Palace fans must be gutted reading these quotes from Manea as they seemingly rule out the chance of Dragusin ending up at Selhurst Park this summer.

The teenager is desperate to stay at Juventus and there does not appear to be an opening to sign him permanently in the coming months, which could rule Palace out of the race for his services and provide a major blow to Steve Parish’s plans in the short and long-term for the club. Fans will surely be frustrated that they now look set to miss out on the young prospect following this update.

Whilst Manea has opened the door to a loan deal for Dragusin if Juventus have no plans to play him next season, Palace may not be able to provide him with regular game-time. At the age of 19, the Romanian is a prospect rather than an established player, and there is no way for Palace to guarantee that he will be able to start every week with the centre-back options they have at their disposal. Mamadou Sakho, James Tomkins, Martin Kelly, Chiekhou Kouyate, Gary Cahill and Scott Dann are already at the club, which could limit how much Dragusin is able to play next season if he joins the Eagles.

This would not be an issue with a permanent deal for the 1.91m (6 foot 3) beast, though. All of the aforementioned centre-back options for Palace are 31 or older and heading into the final years of their careers, whilst Dragusin is in the embryonic stages of his.

Therefore, he could be the long-term solution to Palace’s centre-back problems and has the potential to be a key player for years to come, even if it does not happen immediately. That is why a short-term loan deal would not make sense for Palace and why this news is a major blow to Parish’s pursuit of the defender.

Stumpy meets John Cleese at the cricket, on his biggest day yet

There were two mascots at the County Ground on Sunday where Somerset Sabres entertained Worcester Royals in the NUL National League. Before the match started both mascots, `Stumpy’ the Somerset County Cricket Club’s Dragon and Caty Larcombe from Ilminster went out to the middle to toss up with the captains Mike Burns from the Sabres and Graeme Hick from the Royals.Caty, then enjoyed the rest of her day as the guest of the club, and sat on the balcony of the Colin Atkinson along with members of her family. She won her day as mascot after naming the club’s new dragon in a competition run by the Somerset County Gazette. For Stumpy however that was just the start of what was probably his busiest day yet at the club.During the match he circulated among the crowd meeting supporters and signing autographs, and yet again he almost became the hero of the day. Whilst Somerset were batting skipper Mike Burns drove a ball hard into the crowd in front of the Colin Atkinson Pavilion , where it hit a spectator.Luckily enough the St Johns Ambulance were quickly on the scene, but also on the scene was Stumpy, who as well as being a dab hand at mending pipes is also a qualified first aider. Stumpy was not called upon on this occasion but was all ready to help and had his dragon first aid kit at the ready!During the tea interval Stumpy invited his young fans to try to bowl him out. Under the watchful eye of his coach, Peter Robinson, Stumpy was beaten only once, and that was by a slower ball that was bowled by ten year old Richard Stabbins from Bridgwater.Richard, who attends Enmore Primary School is a keen cricketer, and plays `Corner Cricket’ for South West Somerset. After his achievements he was presented with a minicricket bat, an autographed team sheet and the match ball from the Somerset innings by Peter Robinson.Later in the day Stumpy was introduced to comedian John Cleese, who was supporting his fellow `Westonian’ Rob Turner whose benefit match it was.Membership secretary Jo Betsworth told me at the end of the day: "Stumpy is proving to be very popular indeed with all the supporters both young and old and he certainly seems to have enjoyed himself today."At the end of a long hard day Stumpy went back home for a well earned rest before next appearing at the County Ground on August 19th when Somerset Sabres entertain Nottingham Outlaws in a Floodlit NUL match.

Wolves interested in signing Diego Costa

With Bruno Lage now sitting comfortably in the Wolves hot seat, it’s time for the new manager to pick out some fresh faces.

He knows the Old Gold will have to act shrewdly in the transfer market so don’t expect too many marquee arrivals.

What’s the word?

One way Wolves could get around their limited finances is by signing players on loan or via a free transfer.

Back in January, the Old Gold were touted with a switch for Diego Costa. He’d left Atletico Madrid by mutual consent but a move was ultimately a non-starter due to his hefty wages.

However, according to Brazilian outlet UOL, Wolves are interested in acquiring the 32-year-old again.

Lage is targeting a more detailed internal evaluation of the striker in an attempt to work out whether a deal would be viable financially.

In recent weeks, Costa has been contacted by Benfica and Saudi club Al Nassr.

A boost for European hopes

Costa hasn’t played any football for the best part of six months now but it would be hard to turn down a man of his qualities.

The bullish Spain international is one of the biggest threats in European football, combining an expert way of finding the net with an aggressive and abrasive style of play.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-alena-dike-neves-barisic” title=”Real the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

Described as an “animal” by Jose Mourinho during his time with Chelsea, there is no better way to describe the way in which he plays football.

Capable of finding the back of the net on a regular basis, Costa is a player fit to fire Wolves back into Europe.

They ended last term in 13th place, far away from their goal of Europa League football. Nuno Santo was missing Raul Jimenez from November onwards while he recovered from a fractured skull but Costa would beef up the new manager’s options significantly.

After all, he is one of the most potent around. During his previous spell in England, the veteran racked up a tally of 52 goals in 89 Premier League appearances.

A large portion of those strikes helped Chelsea to two title wins; initially in 2014/15 and then in 2016/17.

Costa knows the aggressive nature of the Premier League inside out and is perfectly suited to succeed in English football.

Like Jimenez, he is capable of linking the play and his experience is exactly what Lage needs during his first campaign in the job.

There is no guarantee that Jimenez will return in the same vein of form so landing another forward is no bad idea.

Club president reveals Spurs manager offer

Speaking to Spanish radio station Cadena SER (via Sky Sports), Sevilla president Jose Castro has lifted the lid on a ‘dizzying’ offer made by Tottenham Hotspur for manager Julen Lopetegui.

The Lowdown: Tottenham search continues…

Spurs have seen a host of managers come and go out of contention when it comes to the hot seat.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Lilywhites have most recently botched talks for Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso – with the quest for a new manager seemingly showing no sign of ending.

Now, lifting the lid on another managerial offer made by Tottenham, Sevilla’s president has come out with a major claim.

The Latest: Castro lifts lid on Spurs offer…

Speaking to Cadena SER (via Sky), Castro explained that Lopetegui himself revealed the offer from Tottenham in a phone call – describing it as a ‘dizzying’ one.

“Julen rang me and told me. He said he’d received offers he’d not listened to in addition to a dizzying one from Tottenham,” explained the Los Nervionenses chief.

“But he said he doesn’t forget things and that he is very motivated here. We believed and believe in him, giving him a two-year contract extension, and I’m sure he will bring much more to the club.

“You see his ability and leadership every day. Some coaches are more driven by economic factors but Julen is very clear that he is happy here and he even said it would be very difficult to find a better place to work than here.”

The Verdict: Yet another sucker punch…

Described as a ‘very serious’ and ‘hard-working’ manager overall by president Castro in another interview (via The Athletic), this latest revelation comes as another managerial blow for Spurs.

The £2.5 million-per-year boss has enjoyed a rebirth since unceremoniously leaving the Spanish national team for Real Madrid, where he was sacked after just four and a half months.

Lopetegui would have fitted Tottenham’s desire for a manager who encourages open, attacking football – with the Spaniard’s teams known for their excellence in possession and patience in the build up (The Coaches’ Voice).

It appears now that the Spurs hunt continues, but chairman Daniel Levy is slowly running out of options.

In other news: Levy offered chance to sign ‘extraordinary’ £120,000-per-week ‘genius’ in Tottenham transfer discussions, find out more here.

AAP06-May-2002Adam Gilchrist has become the first regular No.7 batsman to top the Test batting rankings.Gilchrist’s awesome form against South Africa over the summer took his Test average to 60.00 and meant it was only a matter of time before he became the first Australian since Steve Waugh to top the batting list. The West Australian’s elevation comes after first Brian Lara and then Sachin Tendulkar dropped below him in the India v West Indies series in the Windies.Gilchrist is the first regular No.7 batsman to claim the top ranking on the PwC ratings.Opener Matthew Hayden, in 5th spot, is the only other Australian in the top 10 with Steve Waugh, Damien Martyn and Justin Langer 11th, 12th and 13th.With no more Test cricket to play till the tour to Pakistan, Gilchrist’s chances of retaining top spot depend on what Tendulkar and Lara do in the remaining two Tests in their current series.Fellow wicketkeeper and left-handed batsman Andy Flower of Zimbabwe was top for just three months late last year.Inzamam-ul-Haq was another short-lived No.1, occupying top place for just a couple of weeks late in 1997.Now Inzamam is back in contention after his magnificent triple-century in Lahore lifted him to fourth.Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan is well out in front in the bowling standings, followed by Glenn McGrath, South African skipper Shaun Pollock and Shane Warne, with the top four spots all unchanged.
