66 overseas players in final IPL auction list

The IPL has released its final list of 66 overseas players who will be involved in the IPL auction on Tuesday

Cricinfo staff16-Jan-2010The IPL has released its final list of 66 overseas players who will be involved in the IPL auction on Tuesday. The list is a mix of rising stars such as Kieron Pollard and Eoin Morgan, and ICL returnees like Shane Bond and Damien Martyn in addition to Pakistan players returning to the IPL-fold. The list includes players from all eight Test-playing nations other than India, with 11 players from Pakistan, Australia and South Africa; nine from Sri Lanka; eight from England and West Indies; four from New Zealand and one each from Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Canada and Holland.Initially, 97 players had registered for the IPL auction and once the franchises had gone through the names, the list was pruned to 66.Brad Haddin, Phillip Hughes and Doug Bollinger are prominent Australia players in the list along with Damien Martyn. Haddin’s reputation as an attacking wicket-keeper batsman, and Bollinger’s impressive performance with the ball in both ODIs and Tests, make them strong contenders. Hughes could go high in the auction, given his average of 51.22 in Twenty20 cricket.Bangladesh’s flag-bearer is allrounder Shakib Al Hasan, who, despite being ranked the No.1 allrounder during last year’s auction, wasn’t picked. Eoin Morgan’s aggression in the ODI series against South Africa will have some franchises interested – England’s players were named in the list only after the IPL organisers received a guarantee that they would be available for the full season. From New Zealand, Shane Bond’s admirable show after returning from the ICL, in the Champions Trophy, as well as in his short-lived Test comeback, makes him a bankable buy.The list also includes Pakistan’s Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi, who had played for Deccan Chargers in the first season, and Sohail Tanvir, who struck the winning runs for Rajasthan Royals in the final of the inaugural edition. Pakistan’s finds of 2009, Mohammad Aamer and Umar Akmal, are also in the list, as are ICL-returnees Imran Nazir, Abdul Razzaq and Naved-ul-Hasan. Pakistan’s players did not participate in the IPL in 2009 following a deterioration in diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008.West Indies boast an impressive group of contenders; chief among them is Trinidad and Tobago’s Pollard, whose clean, ruthless hitting in the Champions League Twenty20 could merit a lucrative IPL contract. Ramnaresh Sarwan comes back on the auction list while, for South Africa, left-arm fast bowler Wayne Parnell is in the fray for a deal. Here is the complete list:Australia: Brad Haddin, Philip Hughes, Doug Bollinger, Ashley Noffke, Adam Voges, Luke Pomersbach, Clint McKay, Graham Manou, Ben Laughlin, Jason Krejza, Damien MartynEngland: Tim Bresnan, Eoin Morgan, Robert Key, Anthony McGrath, Monty Panesar, Mark Ramprakash, Graeme Swann, Jonathon TrottPakistan: Shahid Afridi, Misbah-ul-Haq, Umar Gul, Imran Nazir, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Mohammad Aamer, Abdul Razzaq, Kamran Akmal, Umar Akmal, Saeed Ajmal, Sohail TanvirSouth Africa: Zander de Bruyn, Wayne Parnell, Tyron Henderson, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Rory Kleinveldt, Yusuf Abdulla, Vernon Philander, Johan van der Wath, Vaughn van Jaarsveld, Morne van Vyk, Justin KempSri Lanka: Nuwan Kulasekara, Nuwan Zoysa, Upul Tharanga, Thissara Perera, Thilina Kandamby, Kaushalya Weeraratne, Chanaka Welegedara, Chinthaka Jayasinghe, Chamara SilvaWest Indies: Kieron Pollard, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Daren Ganga, Lendl Simmons, Darren Bravo, Wavell Hinds, Kemar Roach, Sulieman BennNew Zealand: Grant Elliott, Lou Vincent, Shane Bond, Nathan McCullumZimbabwe: Murray GoodwinBangladesh: Shakib Al HasanCanada: Rizwan CheemaNetherlands: Ryan ten Doeschate

Phillips a long way from signing Leeds deal

Leeds United hero Kalvin Phillips is still a long way from signing a new contract with the Whites, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Phillips’ future up in the air

The 25-year-old has arguably been the key player of the Marcelo Bielsa era, performing consistently in Leeds’ midfield and making 222 appearances for the club.

The hope is that Phillips agrees a new deal at Elland Road in the near future, amid reports linking him with moves to some of the country’s biggest teams – Leeds are said to value him at around £60m.

The midfielder’s current contract expires in the summer of 2024, so the Whites are at least not at risk of losing him on the cheap any time soon, but his crowning as England’s 2021 Player of the Year and Premier League form are sure to draw more and more interest as that deals ticks down.

The Latest: Journalist gives worrying update

Jones has provided an important update on Phillips’ future, telling Give Me Sport that he and the club are still a distance apart when it comes to agreeing terms on a new deal:

“He loves Leeds, there’s no doubt about that. He has definitely enjoyed the platform they’ve given him to go on and become an England player.

“But, at the moment, from what I understand, they are quite a long way from finding common ground over his salary.”

The Verdict: Coming to the end?

In an ideal world, Phillips would extend his stay at Elland Road and spend the rest of his career at the club, but football rarely works like that.

The England international clearly loves Leeds and will always have a special place in his heart for them, but it is only natural that he could be tempted for a fresh challenge.

With Bielsa’s men languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League, the idea of one of the heavyweights coming in for him could be too great a challenge to turn down.

That lure of Champions League football is great for most players and Phillips may want to test himself against the very best in the peak years of his career – former player David Norris said this week Phillips will be looking for ‘bigger and better things’ (MOT Leeds News).

London extends Middlesex deal till 2011

Adam London has signed a new two-year contract with Middlesex which will keep him at Lord’s till the end of the 2011 season

Cricinfo staff29-Oct-2009Adam London has signed a new two-year contract with Middlesex, keeping him at Lord’s till the end of the 2011 season. The 21-year-old left-hander made his first-class and List A debuts for the county in the 2009 season after graduating from the youth setup.Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s managing director of cricket, was delighted that London had extended his deal. “Adam is a committed, capable and exciting young cricketer, as he showed at the end of last season when he scored a couple of half centuries for the first eleven,” Fraser told . “In each innings he showed character, firstly on debut against a strong Gloucestershire seam attack at Lord’s, and then when he made a match-saving 65 against Derbyshire at Uxbridge with a broken finger. On both occasions he showed that he is made of the right stuff. Adam has a bright future and it is good to know that he is spending it at Middlesex.”London has played four first-class matches, scoring 190 runs at 27.14, including two half-centuries. He has featured in two List A games as well.

Rangers: Van Bronckhorst must axe Arfield if he arrives

Ex-Feyenoord head coach Gio van Bronckhorst is reportedly closing in on a deal to take over at Rangers to replace Steven Gerrard.

Aston Villa poached the ex-Liverpool man from the Gers last week and Ross Wilson is now moving swiftly to get a new man in the dugout for the clash with Hibernian next weekend.

Upon his arrival, van Bronckhorst will have a number of key decisions to make, regarding team selections, formations and transfers.

Time’s up

One decision he will need to make is whether or not to extend Scott Arfield’s contract at Ibrox. The 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and van Bronckhorst will need to decide on what to do with his future, whether he will allow him to leave as a free agent or keep him at the club for another year.

Based on his performances in the Premiership for the Gers this term, Arfield should be let go by the club. He has not shown enough on the pitch this season to prove that he is deserving of a new contract and the Dutchman must wield his axe and make a call that could make him an instant hit in Glasgow.

Gerrard handed Arfield six appearances in the Premiership this season and two in the Europa League. Whilst he has not been a regular in the side, eight appearances in the two main competitions for Rangers by this point in the campaign suggests that the former Anfield hero saw value in him.

However, he has not shown enough back in his displays to warrant his inclusion. Per SofaScore, he has lost a whopping 71% of his duels on the pitch in the league and averaged a rating of 6.66. He has also only created two chances, whilst scoring one goal and missing two big chances.

The £1.8m-rated Canadian international averaged a rating of 6.85 and lost 63% of his duels in the 2020/21 campaign, whilst only averaging 0.4 key passes per game. This suggests that his performances have been declining over the past 18 months and now could be the perfect time for the club to part ways with him.

Therefore, one of van Bronckhorst’s first tasks as Rangers manager, should the appointment be made official, is to axe Arfield from the squad and sell him in the January window.

Pietersen spares England's blushes

If England had intended to lay down a marker in their penultimate fixture before the start of the ICC World Twenty20, this was not it

If England had intended to lay down a marker in their penultimate fixture before the start of the ICC World Twenty20, this was not it. They duly beat the part-timers of Scotland by six wickets with an over to spare, with Kevin Pietersen allaying any lingering concerns about his fitness with a sparky performance in the field and a matchwinning 53 from 39 balls. But either side of his efforts, England were as flat as the atmosphere on a balmy evening in Nottingham. They lacked penetration with the ball, and at times were numbingly naïve with the bat. But at least they avoided humiliation, and that for the moment will have to do.England did manage to finish with something of a flourish – Pietersen flogged the final ball of the match for six to bring up his half-century, having added 49 in 5.4 overs with Eoin Morgan, whose former team-mates, Ireland, have not had this much trouble in seeing off the Scots in recent months. At first, Morgan wasn’t required to do much more than hand the strike back to his partner, although as the winning post drew nearer, he unfurled a few of his trademark hurling strokes to finish on 23 not out from 17.Up until that partnership, however, England struggled to make headway against a side that had been beset by off-field problems in the build-up to this tournament. Luke Wright epitomised England’s strange lack of clarity, as he fretted his way to 19 from 18 balls in his first England appearance since September 2008. Opening the innings with little domestic form to fall back on, he was horrendously dropped on 9 by his namesake, Craig, at mid-on, before picking out the diminutive Majid Haq with a similar stroke two overs later. It was with the ball, however, that Haq really laid into England. Ravi Bopara had begun to bat with his customary sparkle in reaching 32 from 29 balls, but he gave his start away with a slog to long-off, whereupon Owais Shah drilled a wristy drive straight into Callum McLeod’s midriff at short cover for a first-ball duck.Scotland turned to spin at both ends, with Ryan Watson so nearly compounding the collapse when, first, Pietersen survived an agonisingly tight appeal for lbw, then two balls later, Collingwood poked tentatively at a length ball, and chipped a leading edge into no-man’s land at silly point. On 7, Collingwood survived a stumping opportunity when Haq speared one down the leg-side, and his dire innings ended two balls (and another half-chance) later, when Fraser Watts made good ground at long-off to give Gordon Drummond a wicket with his second delivery. But Pietersen endured, and so long as he was at the crease, the situation was never quite critical. He started tentatively with 7 from 13 balls, but a vast blow off Watson landed in the top tier of the stands at long-on to transform his momentum. A well-placed four past point followed in the same over, before Haq was subjected to a superlative pummel through extra cover. Pietersen then stepped across his stumps to clip Drummond through midwicket to haul the asking rate below seven an over. Only at that point was the result a foregone conclusion.England’s lacklustre day had started in the field, where, with James Anderson and Graeme Swann both resting minor niggles, they lacked a killer instinct. Scotland, however, lacked the firepower to make them pay for their reticence, even though Colin Smith did his best with a handy 45 from 32 balls.Paul Collingwood claimed two wickets including Scotland’s top-scorer, Colin Smith•Getty Images

Scotland’s fortunes have been in freefall ever since they failed to reach the 2011 World Cup in the qualifying tournament in South Africa earlier this year. Though they saved their one-day status by the skin of their teeth, the ramifications were clear for all to see when their veteran seamer, John Blain, stormed out of the camp on the eve of the competition following a bust-up with his captain, Gavin Hamilton.Hamilton memorably scored more runs for Scotland at the 1999 World Cup (217) than any player in England’s ill-starred campaign, and a decade on from that performance, he showed glimpses of his past glories in a run-a-ball 20, including a clean slap for six back over Dimitri Mascarenhas’s head. By that stage, however, Mascarenhas – armed with the new ball – had already struck the first blow for England, when Watts tried to slog a length delivery over long-off, but instead had his off and middle stumps demolished. At the end of the Powerplays, England turned to their surprise selection, Adil Rashid, who had been called into the squad late as a replacement for Andrew Flintoff, despite having played a minimal role in Yorkshire’s Twenty20 Cup campaign. In Swann’s absence, it was a handy opportunity to assess Rashid’s temperament, and though he started nervily with a series of full-tosses, he nevertheless struck with his fifth delivery, when Hamilton got underneath a slog-sweep and picked out Wright at deep midwicket. At the other end, Pietersen’s offspin was brought into the attack, which in front of a disappointingly sparse crowd, lent the atmosphere something of an exhibition feel. Smith and Kyle Coetzer soon gave England something to think about, however, with a flurry of boundaries including three sixes in five balls, as they put together an enterprising stand of 62 in 6.4 overs.Their performance was punctuated by a lucky let-off for Coetzer on 22, when James Foster gathered brilliantly way outside off stump to create what should have been Rashid’s second wicket of the innings. Foster was one of the few unqualified successes for England, but with no TV replays in this match, he was again denied a mention in the scorebook when he threw down the stumps with Ryan Watson short of his crease. He did, however, earn an assist from the penultimate ball of the innings, as Stuart Broad prevented Neil McCallum from stealing a bye in a final over that went for only two runs. For much of the innings, England persisted with their medium-pacers, and Collingwood cut down the scoring options with a series of accurate offcutters. He eventually ended Coetzer’s enterprising stand when Pietersen plucked a simple chance on the long-on boundary, and three overs later he added the scalp of Smith as well. Becalmed by the departure of Coetzer, Smith added only seven singles to his own score before climbing into Collingwood and sending a steepling top-edge straight back to the bowler. The lack of penetration in England’s bowling was a concern, although Ryan Sidebottom – in his latest comeback from injury – gave a reminder of the reasons why the England management rate him so highly, bowling full and swinging late to concede only 19 runs in his four overs. With Swann and Anderson waiting in the wings, the team surely has more wicket-taking options for later contests. It’s fair to say, they will need them.

-Avisei e o juiz não me ouviu, deu cartão a jogador errado.

Source claims Phillips keen on extension

Kalvin Phillips is keen to put pen to paper on a new deal at Leeds United, according to a club source.

The Lowdown: Loyal to Leeds

Phillips, 25, has become one of the most highly-rated defensive midfielders recently and has been linked to Manchester City as Fernandinho’s replacement.

After it was claimed earlier in the month that the England international and Leeds have opened talks about a potential new deal at the club, Phillips has gone on to play every minute of Leeds’ season so far after missing the 5-1 opening day defeat to Manchester United.

The Latest: Source revelation

According to Football Insider, a source within the club has revealed that the midfielder is ‘keen’ to put pen to paper on an extension before the end of the year, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2024.

Reacting to that, former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor said: “He’s going to have aspirations of playing at the top.

“I’m sure his agent will say, ‘We’ll sign a new contract with a release clause.

“Then Leeds will get the right sort of money that they deserve. He doesn’t seem like the sort of player who would want to leave Leeds for a small fee because he’s got a year left.

“I’m sure within the next two seasons he’ll get that move.”

Agbonlahor also commented on Phillips’ potential price tag: “Someone like Phillips, I would say is worth around £60million or £70million, so the release clause would be around £60million.”

The Verdict: Good news for Leeds

Keeping hold of your key assets is vital for every football club, especially clubs who are seeking to improve and potentially break into the top six and compete in European football on a regular basis.

Phillips’ importance to the Whites is clear to see. He started 28 of his 29 appearances in his debut season in the Premier League, partnering that with a 85% pass completion rate per game and 2.6 tackles per 90 minutes.

Whilst a new deal with a release clause may eventually mean he will leave Leeds,it does mean they will receive a hefty and warranted fee that they will then be able to spend elsewhere to improve their squad.

Whether his desire to pen a longer contract results in an extended stay or a massive move elsewhere, the club will benefit regardless.

In other news, this former Premier League striker has criticised the form of a certain member of Marcelo Bielsa’s side. Find out more here.

Leeds could make short-term signing in Berardi

Leeds United could make a shrewd short-term signing in Gaetano Berardi amid Paul Robinson’s transfer claim.

What’s the story?

The Italian was let go by Marcelo Bielsa’s side over the summer amid a long spell out injured, but with the Whites facing a bit of an injury crisis at the back, former goalkeeper Paul Robinson has suggested Berardi as a potential solution.

He said: “Depending on his condition, depending on how fit he is and where he is and what he’s been doing for the last couple of months, he could be an option. He’s somebody who knows the club, knows the players and knows the manager.

“It’d be a difficult one and a bit of humble pie to be asking, ‘can you come back and help us out?’. But as a person and a player, he probably would answer the call. It’s an option but it just depends on how serious and how long the injuries are going to be.”

He loves Elland Road

With 155 games played for the club, Berardi was a reliable customer at the back for Leeds as they fought their way to the Premier League.

He first started playing for the Elland Road side back in the 2014/2015 campaign, and featured in 22 of the Whites’ promotion-winning campaign in the Championship last season.

Speaking after his emotional exit from Elland Road, Berardi himself said: “What we built in the last years with the people is something priceless. It is very sad, it is hard to leave this place, to leave the club and leave a lot of good people.

“The fans see what you give for the team, you don’t have to be a really strong player to have the respect of the fans, they can see what you do and if you are an incredible player like Pablo (Hernandez) they love you, if you are an average player like me they love you as well.   They really see what you are, it is incredible and I couldn’t have imagined this, I will always have the respect for them.”

The Whites don’t need him to come in and play week-in and week-put in the Premier League, but if he can prove his fitness, then he could be very valuable cover and someone who can add a bit more experience in the dressing room too.

The 5 foot 10 ace could be a real short-term fix for Bielsa’s side.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has made an exciting claim about Leeds United’s Rodrigo…
