Chingoka re-elected Zimbabwe board chairman

A new Zimbabwe Cricket board has been elected following a special general meeting and Peter Chingoka been re-elected chairman

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Apr-2011A new Zimbabwe Cricket board has been elected following a special general meeting held in Harare on Friday. The elections were held in accordance with the ZC constitution. The following were elected to the board by way of ballot: Peter Chingoka, LV Bhila, E Chagadama, E Kandi, F Kapuya, M Kuchocha, WT Manase, A Maposa, B Matemayi, S Matshaka, CG Maunze, J Mbanda and M Mudukuti. The new board then unanimously re-elected Peter Chingoka as chairman of the board and Wilson T Manase as deputy chairman. Chingoka has been president of Zimbabwe Cricket since 1992, shortly after Zimbabwe got Test status. He became a target of a player strike in 2005, when certain cricketers refused to play till he quit the position.

Amir to appeal against ICC sanctions

Mohammad Amir will file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration in Sports (CAS) against the five-year ban imposed on him by an independent tribunal, his lawyer has said. Amir was handed the punishment under article 2.1.1 of the ICC’s anti-corruption code after the tribunal found him guilty of bowling two deliberate no-balls in the Lord’s Test against England last year. The sanction was the minimum prescribed under the code and Amir’s lawyer Shahid Karim said the tribunal, had its hands not been tied to the code, could have gone below five years. It’s a point echoed by the lawyer of Salman Butt, Yasin Patel, and though no indication came from Patel whether there would be an appeal, the point could be a crucial one should any appeal be made.Under the ICC code, the players have 21 days from Saturday to appeal to the CAS. “On behalf of Amir I want to say that we will be disputing the judgment to say the least,” Karim said soon after the verdict had been read out. Just before he spoke, amid extraordinary scenes outside the Qatar Financial Centre, where the hearings were held, Amir was mobbed by a group of Pakistani fans as he tried to leave, and was forced back inside.Indications all through the hearing had been that Karim would bring the mitigating factors of Amir’s young age and his clean disciplinary record until Lord’s into play in a bid to reduce any punishment. “We will be challenging it and we have a right of appeal which we will exercise,” he said. “We are disappointed by the judgment as we felt the tribunal could have exercised its discretion to give a lower sentence.”But the key development appears to be that both Karim and Patel feel the sentences given by the tribunal could – and would – have been lower had the ICC’s code allowed for it. In their written statement, the tribunal said it has “recommended to the ICC certain changes to the Code with a view to providing flexibility in relation to minimum sentences in exceptional circumstances.” Though that left the direction of the flexibility ambiguous – whether they wanted the minimum punishment of five years to be higher or lower – one of the players told ESPNcricinfo that the tribunal was prepared to hand out lower sentences had the code allowed. The lawyers confirmed as much.”I think the silver lining in all this is that at the end they made an order to the effect that they will be asking the ICC to amend the code so as to allow the tribunal in exceptional circumstances to lower the sentence, if they wanted, to below the bottom of what was prescribed,” Karim said. That, believed Karim, left the door open for some form of reversal of the sanction, either in its entirety or a reduction. “If the ICC were to do that, then we’ll see what our options are. Clearly the tribunal felt its’ hands were tied by the minimum that was prescribed in the quote and therefore they could not go below that, which we disputed. The inference is that they wanted to go below the minimum but they could not because of the minimum prescribed to which they were bound. We’ll see now what the future course of events turns out to be.”Neither Mohammad Asif, who was banned for seven years, or his lawyer Alexander Cameron made any statement – though it is believed they may in due course. But Patel, in a short statement read out to the media, echoed Karim’s point. “The tribunal’s hands were tied by the ICC’s code to a five-year minimum,” he said. “Mr Butt is encouraged that the tribunal advised the ICC to change the code or revise the minimum term.”None of the players spoke publicly and are not expected to. Their mood was difficult to gauge, though Karim said Amir had remained composed through the hearings as he was confident of his innocence. Ultimately, however, Karim acknowledged the general feeling among the media that sentences could’ve been worse. “Yes it could’ve been worse for the offences they were found guilty of, technically speaking. If this sanction was to stay in place, he could still make a comeback.”

Pitch and approach wrong foot Karnataka

When Baroda decided to play their Ranji Trophy semi-final at the Reliance Stadium instead of their regular first-class venue, but they would certainly not have bargained for such a dream entry into the final

Abhishek Purohit in Vadodara04-Jan-2011When Baroda decided to play their Ranji Trophy semi-final at the Reliance Stadium instead of their regular first-class venue, the Moti Bagh Stadium, they did so with an intent to blunt the rampant Karnataka pace attack, but they would certainly not have bargained for a dream entry into the final much before tea on the second day. The dramatic denouement is further magnified by the fact that the only other two-day finish this season involved a Plate League mismatch between Rajasthan – who are currently piling it on against Tamil Nadu in the semi-final – and Tripura – who lost four of their five games outright, three of them by an innings, and the other one by ten wickets.Karnataka and Baroda were not as mismatched. Still, Karnataka were the overwhelming favourites going into the match against a side with four bowlers who had never taken a first-class five-wicket haul, a fifth bowler making his debut, and three batsmen with just one first-class century between them. Yet, it was the inexperienced young team that propelled Baroda to their first final in nine years, on a dry track that turned viciously throughout.Thirty-three wickets tumbled in just under five sessions, and the surface – which looked straight out of a drought-hit area – was not a great advertisement for the knockouts of the country’s premier first-class tournament. But it was definitely not unplayable, and the batsmen have to shoulder a part of the responsibility for the early finish. There was hardly an attempt to use the feet against spin to smother the turn, and Karnataka were especially guilty of being leaden-footed. Just hanging around, with balls gripping and biting, was of no use, and when shots were played they were off the wrong deliveries. Some fell trying to sweep balls that were too full to be trapped in front, others let the pitch prey on their minds and went fatally back to length deliveries, while some fell poking hard at balls that could have been left alone.”We batted badly. There are no excuses if you want to win the Ranji Trophy. On any kind of surface, one should be able to put up the runs, like Mumbai do,” Sanath Kumar, the Karnataka coach said. “Unfortunately, batting has been a problem for us throughout the season. We have struggled to put up runs in the first innings. They were the better side on the day. No question about it.”The game was shifted to the Reliance Stadium from Baroda’s regular first-class venue, Moti Bagh Stadium. Sanath said that Karnataka were mentally switched on to play on the Moti Bagh track which helps the seamers throughout the match, and offers true bounce. “Our preparations were tuned accordingly. We never thought we would play here, and certainly did not expect it to turn so much.”Sanath also admitted that his side might have misread the wicket. “We thought it would be a batting track, and then take slow turn on the third and fourth day.” This led Karnataka to play Sunil Raju, a batsman who could bowl spin, rather than opt for a second specialist spinner in Udit Patel alongside Sunil Joshi. “In hindsight, we would have played the extra spinner,” he said. “But we opted to strengthen the batting instead.” Moreover, Raju, who has had corrective work on his action, was cautioned in the first innings after a delivery reared up.Karnataka certainly had the stronger batting, but Baroda’s captain Pinal Shah turned the game with a pivotal 83. Mukesh Narula, the Baroda coach, felt that if Pinal could get runs on the surface, batsmen like Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey could have done the same. “I have tremendous respect for their batsmen, guys like Robin, Manish and Amit Verma. And when we say the wicket was so tough to bat on, how was Pinal able to score? See, this was a wicket where you needed to play the horizontal-bat shots against the spinners, rather than play in the V. Most batsmen could not adjust, and paid the price. I also think that if they had come forward and left more deliveries rather than jab and poke from the crease, it wouldn’t have been so bad.”Playing on such surfaces might not be ideal for a semi-final, but Narula felt that batsmen should be prepared to play on all wickets. “Are you telling me that we should never play on turning tracks? The Moti Bagh wicket helps the seamers a lot. In the quarter-final against Railways, from 300-odd for 4, we were seven-eight down in no time after they took the new ball. Now Sanjay Bangar and JP Yadav [the Railways seamers] are no match for Vinay Kumar, Abhimanyu Mithun and Sreenath Aravind. We thought there was no point in playing at Moti Bagh.”I still admit that we don’t have the side to beat Karnataka on any sort of wicket. And considering that, why would I want to play on as bad a wicket as this? It’s just that it turned out to be worse than anyone expected.”While Baroda exploited home advantage perfectly, a disappointed Vinay felt that when it came to important games like the knockouts, the earlier policy of playing at neutral venues should be brought back to avoid such tumultuous matches in future.

Newcastle interested in Taiyo Awoniyi

Newcastle United are interested in signing Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi this summer, according to German football journalist Christian Falk.

What’s the story?

According to Falk, Newcastle, as well as West Ham and Southampton, are interested in signing the 24-year-old this summer with the Nigerian having a release clause of €30m (£25m).

Awoniyi has scored 23 goals in 61 matches for the Bundesliga outfit, at a rate of once every 176 minutes, since making his loan move from Liverpool permanent last summer.

However, this term has been particularly prolific for the 24-year-old, netting 18 times and registering four assists in 39 appearances across all competitions.

The striker has been a serious contributor to the club from the capital side’s recent rise, with Union playing in the Europa Conference League this term and sat currently sixth in the Bundesliga, and could return to England this summer.

Howe will love Awoniyi

It’s no secret that a new striker will be high up the priority list ahead of the summer transfer window for Newcastle United with it being the first since PIF’s takeover of the North East club in October.

£25m January signing Chris Wood has found the back of the net just twice since joining from Burnley whilst Callum Wilson has been sidelined since December with hope that the Englishman will play again this term.

However, neither are long term options with both strikers aged 30.

Having failed to make it into the first-team picture at Liverpool, Awonyi will certainly be keen to make the move to a Premier League club to show English supporters what he’s capable of and potentially what the Reds missed out on.

Although, with Union Berlin on course for another season in Europe, West Ham may be the forward’s preference out of the aforementioned trio if the Hammers can once again qualify for Europe.

The Nigerian who journalist Lolade Adewuyi dubbed a “unicorn” has endured a plethora of loan spells during his career thus far, and was subject to serious praise when on loan at Belgian outfit Royal Excel Mouscron in 2019, with then-teammate Mergim Vojvoda saying: “He should stay his entire life here. We have to offer him a 20-year contract.

“He’s an excellent player with great qualities. If you ask me, it didn’t work with Gent because he was always in the box. Taiwo is a forward who needs to showcase his power and sometimes come deep to find the ball.”

Eddie Howe will need to add higher quality strikers to his ranks this summer and Awoniyi could certainly prove to be a shrewd purchase.

AND in other news: Howe and PIF are now heading for their first big NUFC error, it would be a disaster

Ferguson could have a chance as EFC manager

Everton have appointed Duncan Ferguson as their caretaker manager whilst they search for a full-time head coach to steer the club out of their struggles this season and back into safety, with the side currently teetering on the edge of the relegation zone in 16th, but could the manager they need already be right under their nose?

What’s the word?

Transfer insider, Pete O’Rourke, has given his thoughts on Ferguson’s current position at the club, and where it could lead to if he makes a good impact in the time he has as the current temporary manager.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT:

“It’s in Duncan Ferguson’s hands right now. If he does well, I think there’s a real chance he could get the job.”

Fans will be delighted

The idea that Ferguson could make a really positive impact on the Everton side would be a dream for the fans, as many took to social media wanting the coach to become the manager until at least the end of the season, with one Toffees fan tweeting:

“Duncan Ferguson until the end of the season – he will unite the fanbase. Appoint a new DOF by the summer. Let the DOF decide the next manager. That has to be the plan for Everton.”

Indeed, the Scotsman is a huge fan favourite and legend at the club, playing out most of his career at Goodison with 260 appearances, 68 goals and five assists during his time.

He also won the FA Cup with Everton in 1995, which was the last time the Toffees won a trophy, 27 years ago. He has since taken on a coaching role, outliving six managers so far and remaining an important part of the club to this day, where he is caretaker for the second time in less than three years.

Moshiri needs to make an important decision in recognising the invaluable experience and knowledge of the club that Ferguson offers that money can’t buy.

He has been with the club during the highest highs and in the lowest of lows, with the current situation, one of the lowest points as a relegation battle in the not too distant future is looking a likely scenario if the season continues as it has already.

In the worst case, that could lead Everton to their first ever relegation from the Premier League and their first relegation from top flight football in over 70 years.

Thus, bringing in a manager who gets on well with the supporters is certainly a good idea.

Surrey on top despite Madsen ton

ScorecardWhisper it quietly, but Surrey may have turned a corner. After a few grim years when the club has plumbed the depths of mediocrity (and then kept digging), there are early signs that the first green shoots of recovery may be poking through. Not only has Surrey’s Twenty20 form improved (after a poor start, they are now fourth in the South Group), but they’re second in their Clydesdale Bank 40 group and here have shown that their dire position in the championship is likely to improve.Perhaps such optimism should be tempered. There was a time, not so long ago, when a dominant performance against Derbyshire – and a weakened Derbyshire at that – would have been nothing less than expected. Not anymore. Last season Surrey won just a single championship game, while they reached the halfway stage this year rooted to the foot of the championship table. The days when they could approach any fixture with complacency are long gone. They are well on top in this game. They had a lead of 154 after both sides had batted once and, but for an injury to one of their seamers, would surely have enforced the follow-on. Still, with the pitch showing increasing signs of uneven bounce, their lead of 204 going into the third day already looks imposing. That Derbyshire are still in the game at all is largely due to the efforts of Wayne Madsen and Lee Goddard.Coming together with their side reeling at 81 for 6, the pair added 137 in 36 overs for the seventh wicket, with Madsen recording his third century of the campaign and Goddard his first half-century. The next highest contribution was extras, with 16.For some, the likes of Madsen will always represent everything that is wrong in English cricket. South African born, he is 26-years-old and currently qualifying to play for England. While international cricket may prove a step too far for him, he looks a decent county player. A tendency to plant his front foot will always make him an lbw candidate, but he leaves the ball very well, drives neatly and has admirable powers of concentration. He needed this innings, though. He had scored just 77 runs in his previous seven championship innings but, while his colleagues paid the price for their fallibility outside off stump, Madsen showed the virtue of restraint.Goddard hasn’t enjoyed the best of form, either. The 27-year-old, who returned to Derbyshire from Durham in search of first-team cricket at the end of last season, lost his place to Tom Poynton a few weeks ago. Here, however, he neatly compiled the third half-century of his first-class career and seemed to have taken his side to within an inch of avoiding the follow-on.Both Goddard and Madsen may feel that the manner of their departure undid some of their good work, however. While the reverse sweep has become an accepted part of the modern game, neither man had played the shot until the ball that dismissed them and, in other circumstances, falling five short of the follow-on mark would have had match-defining consequences. The key moment of the day came earlier, however. Tim Linley had threatened to run through the Derbyshire batting with a well-controlled spell of medium-fast seam bowling, but suddenly pulled-up midway through his run-up and left the field in obvious pain. He was later diagnosed with ligament damage and won’t bowl again in the match. It was a completely different game after his departure. While Andre Nel and Chris Tremlett bowled pretty well, the support seamers – Stewart Walters and Younis Khan – allowed Goddard and Madsen to settle in with some comfort.Until that point, Surrey had been utterly dominant. Linley, with 4 for 13, expertly exploited a small ridge on the pitch and, at one stage, claimed 3 for 3 in 15 balls. Though he won London CC’s ‘search for a star’ bowling competition in 2005, Linley is never likely to be a star in the Surrey dressing room. He’s not blessed with great pace or outrageous skill and, on the flattest of pitches, can look a little toothless. He’s a useful player, though. Here he landed the ball on the perfect length and gained enough bounce and movement to trouble all the batsmen. As Chris Adams, Surrey’s cricket manager, put it: “maybe he’ll never get the best in the world out, but he’ll bowl up hill and into the wind all day. He reminds me of Mark Robinson.”Garry Park was undone by bounce, prodding outside off stump, Greg Smith lost his off and middle stumps when he missed one that nipped back, Chesney Hughes edged one angled across him and Wes Durston simply missed a straight one. Earlier Chris Rogers was also a victim of bounce, flashing a catch to point, while Robin Peterson edged to slip and Steffan Jones was pinned on the foot by a yorker.Nel looked dangerous with the new ball and delivered more overs than anyone, while there was an encouraging display from Tremlett, too. While he didn’t quite maintain the requisite control, he did generate decent pace and, at times, alarming bounce. He gave the impression of a man just coming to the boil. Perhaps his, and his new club’s, best days may be yet to come.
