ScorecardJesse Ryder completed a 10-wicket match haul to hand victory to Essex•Getty ImagesGlamorgan suffered their first Championship defeat of the summer as Essex crushed them by 248 runs in their Division Two match at Chelmsford. After resuming on 110 for 1, having been left a target of 462, they were bowled out for 213 soon after lunch with only 18-year-old Aneurin Donald putting up much resistance. The teenager caught the eye with some fine strokes either side of the wicket before he tried to square cut a shoulder high delivery from David Masters and was caught behind by James Foster for 67.Donald’s fine innings contained seven fours and one six and served to underline the shortcomings of most of his colleagues. Admittedly, overcast conditions did provide the Essex bowlers with some assistance but not nearly as much as their efforts would imply.Poor shot-selection speeded Glamorgan’s demise and left Essex celebrating a third victory from their last four games. Fittingly it was Jesse Ryder who sealed the win by having Graham Wagg caught at long-off by Graham Napier.Wagg decided to hit out and struck two sixes on his way to 28 from 18 balls before Ryder had the last word. It gave Ryder 4 for 53 and a match haul of 10 for 100, only the second time in his career he has picked up a ten-wicket haul. The game from which Essex emerged with 21 points also provided captain Foster with personal satisfaction as he emerged with seven catches, five of them in the second innings. The first of those ended the resistance of his Glamorgan counterpart Jacques Rudolph, who added just 2 to his 45 before Ryder found the edge. This set the Welsh county on a slippery slope as seven wickets tumbled in the morning session for 72 despite Donald’s valiant attempts to keep his side’s interest in proceedings alive. But they quickly evaporated as Colin Ingram, Chris Cooke, Mark Wallace and Craig Meschede all departed within 12 overs, only Ingram managing to reach double figuresMasters, with 3 for 37, supplied Ryder with his main support while left-arm spinner Liam Dawson 2 for 34 and Jamie Porter, who ended with 1 for 41, shared the other wickets as Essex were able to avenge the 89-run defeat suffered in Cardiff earlier in the season. Glamorgan return to Wales with just three points and reflecting on a setback that put the brake on their promotion ambitions.

Curran's all-round quality gives Surrey a lift

Leicestershire’s elation after pulling off their first Championship win since September 2012 was tinged with reality as promotion contenders Surrey gave them a thumping at Grace Road

ECB/PA09-Jun-2015
ScorecardTom Curran had a fine all-round game in Surrey’s victory•Getty ImagesAfter the euphoria of ending their long run of 37 championship matches without a win at Essex the previous week, Leicestershire’s heavy defeat against Surrey served as a reminder that they still have plenty of work to do. Surrey, meanwhile, keep up the pressure on Lancashire at the top of the Division Two table.Tom Curran, with a fine all-round display, added energy to Surrey’s display, giving them the verve they will need to remain in contention at the top of the table.A burst of three wickets in the first two overs after lunch put Surrey on their way to a conclusive three-day victory at Grace Road. The second ball after the break saw Chris Tremlett produce a superb delivery that straightened and bowled Foxes opener Angus Robson. In the following over Leicestershire captain Mark Cosgrove got a brute of a ball from Curran that reared off a length to take the shoulder of the bat and loop gently to gully, and two balls later, Andrea Agathangelou was leg before to a delivery that seamed back in and kept a little low.Confidence remains – McKay

Australian all-rounder Clint McKay said Leicestershire knew they still had many areas where they needed to improve after slumping to a three day defeat by Surrey at Grace Road.
“It’s extremely disappointing after the up of beating Essex last week to come down as we did, especially after a great first day and a bit, when we’d bowled them out for 261 and were 100-0,” said McKay.
“We knew the wicket would seam sometimes, and the bounce might be a bit variable, but we didn’t play the conditions well enough, especially with the bat, although we did take 20 wickets again, which is pleasing.
“The confidence we take from the win against Essex doesn’t dissipate overnight. We know when we put four days of cricket together and follow the game plan we will win the game. We’ll fight back against Lancashire next week.”

Had Niall O’Brien not been dropped by Gary Wilson off Curran before scoring, the Surrey wicketkeeper getting his hand to a low chance diving to his left but failing to hang on, Leicestershire might have subsided in short order, but O’Brien went on to score a run a ball 50 before edging left-arm spinner Zafar Ansari to Wilson.Ned Eckersley and Ben Raine also fought hard, but on a wicket with increasingly variable bounce, the prospect of the home team chasing down the 356 they need to win the game was always going to be slim, and the end came shortly after tea, when James Burke picked up two wickets in two balls, both lbw, to end the game.Earlier, Leicestershire made the worst possible start after Surrey added 67 to their overnight score of 217-6, with Steve Davies, batting with a badly bruised hand, finishing with an unbeaten 47.Foxes’ opener Matt Boyce was leg before wicket to Matt Dunn’s first delivery, and it could have been even worse if Rory Burns had been able to cling on to a difficult chance at second slip after Robson edged a drive at Chris Tremlett in the following over, also before Leicestershire had scored a run.

Big Picture

On October 21, a rusty New Zealand batting line-up paid for its impatience in the first ODI against South Africa. Two days later, Jesse Ryder scored 136 off 57 balls for Otago, dominating Ireland’s World Cup preparation game. Ryder’s performance came days after he met New Zealand coach Mike Hesson, who was non-committal about the batsman’s return to the national side ahead of the 2015 World Cup. With Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor sidelined by injury, New Zealand are missing three of their best batsmen against South Africa, and it showed. All three will not play the remaining two ODIs against South Africa, so the incumbent batsmen will have to assess the conditions in Mount Maunganui better and choose their shots wisely if they are to keep the series alive after Friday. New Zealand, however, will have the services of Tim Southee, who was passed fit after missing the first game because of a shoulder niggle, to add teeth to an attack that was disciplined but lacked incisiveness in the six-wicket defeat. While batting and upsetting the concentration of South Africa’s experienced batsmen were concerns for New Zealand, the visitors had fewer issues. The only time they loosened their grip on the game was when Luke Ronchi and Trent Boult shared a record last-wicket stand for New Zealand. South Africa bowled poorly at the death and after the game their captain AB de Villiers reiterated the importance of finishing games off clinically.New Zealand’s top order struggled in the first ODI against South Africa in Mount Maunganui•AFP

Unlike South Africa, whose World Cup combination appears to require only fine-tuning, New Zealand’s drawing board is more cluttered. Daniel Vettori has returned, so where does he fit in? What is the ideal composition of their pace attack? Are allrounders Jimmy Neesham and Corey Anderson good enough to combine as the fifth bowler? Will Neesham cut it as opener? And what about Jesse Ryder?

Watch out for

David Miller v Rilee Rossouw AB de Villiers indicated choosing between the two powerful left-hand batsmen was going to be “a tough decision to make.” Miller sat out of the first game because of a viral infection and Rossouw made a brisk 26. Miller is likely to get his chance in the second ODI, but South Africa bat him as a finisher lower in the order – as opposed to Rossouw at No. 4 – so his opportunity may be slimmer.Trent Boult is not a regular starter in New Zealand’s one-day side. He’s played only two ODIs in the last two years. On Tuesday, however, with Southee and Mitchell McClenaghan not playing, Boult was easily New Zealand’s best bowler. He swung the ball at pace, harried South Africa’s top order and dismissed Faf du Plessis for his first single-digit score in 14 innings.

Team news

Southee’s availability will mean a change to the bowling attack New Zealand fielded on Tuesday. Given the two spinners, Vettori and Nathan McCullum, were able to restrict South Africa, Southee could come in for Kyle Mills.New Zealand (probable): 1 Jimmy Neesham, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Dean Brownlie, 4 Brendon McCullum (capt), 5 Tom Latham, 6 Corey Anderson, 7 Luke Ronchi (wk), 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Daniel Vettori, 10 Kyle Mills/Tim Southee, 11 Trent BoultIf Miller is passed fit, he could replace Rossouw. That’s the only change South Africa are likely to make, despite Wayne Parnell being available for selection. Ryan McLaren is the incumbent allrounder.South Africa (probable) 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 AB de Villiers (capt), 5 JP Duminy, 6 David Miller/Rilee Rossouw, 7 Ryan McLaren, 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Imran Tahir

Stats & trivia

  • De Villiers averages 54 and has a strike rate of 87 against New Zealand. He’s scored 490 runs in 14 ODIs against them.
  • McClenaghan and Southee have both played three ODIs against South Africa. McClenaghan has six wickets at an average of 23.50 in those games; Southee has two at 84.50 apiece.

Quotes

“Anything above 250 is defendable in New Zealand. Everybody struggled at the start of their innings and built up from there. It was a pretty good wicket. It had good bounce. It had good carry and there wasn’t much turn.”
“It’s good to have that competition because it gets the best out of everyone. We’re a competitive group of guys and everyone is pushing each other to do well and it’s nice to have that.”

Duminy, du Plessis mark return with 84-run victory

JP Duminy and Faf du Plessis marked their return to South Africa’s national ODI team with a century and fifty respectively, to lead their team to an 84-run victory over Netherlands

ESPNcricinfo staff31-May-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJP Duminy scored an unbeaten 150 and Faf du Plessis’ hit a quickfire fifty on their return to international cricket after injury breaks, thus helping South Africa to an 84-run win in the one-off ODI against Netherlands in Amstelveen. JP Duminy had not played any competitive cricket since the Brisbane Test last November due to an Achilles tendon injury, while du Plessis was ruled out midway through the ODI series in March against Pakistan with back trouble.South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first. Alviro Petersen was returning to the ODI team for the first time since January 2012, getting a call-up after Graeme Smith was ruled out of the upcoming Champions Trophy due to injury. Petersen was unable, however, to set his stall as he was dismissed early for just 6, edging to Peter van Borren off the bowling of Mudassar Bukhari. With the score on 38, fellow opener Hashim Amla was caught behind by Wesley Barresi off Paul van Meekeren.Any buoyancy Netherlands gained from those two wickets was soon overshadowed when Colin Ingram and JP Duminy dug their heels in to consolidate. The pair put together a match-changing 151-run stand for the third wicket over the course of 28.5 overs to help steady the innings and build-up to a voluminous ending. Ingram finally fell to Bukhari after being caught by Ahsan Malik for 82. Faf du Plessis was sent in next, and together with Duminy, who passed a 100 in the process, put on a further 152 runs in the remaining 13.1 overs. This was a critical partnership for South Africa, and ended up being a match-clinching one at that, as the duo went at 11.54 runs an over – prior to this the match was rumbling along at just over five runs an over. The final five overs of the innings produced 98 runs. A total of 16 boundaries, including 12 sixes, were hit in those latter overs by the pair. South Africa finally finished on 341 for 3.Netherlands started steadily enough, with the openers putting on 43 runs for the first wicket, before both batsmen were dismissed on the same score. South Africa continued to pick up wickets, and were firmly ahead all through despite Peter van Borren and Szwarczynski putting on 70 runs for the fifth wicket. With an asking rate escalating out of control, Netherlands simply had too much to do, as Borren fell two-runs shy of a half-century, and Szwarczynski missed out on what would have been a well-deserved maiden ODI ton. Netherlands eventually finished the innings on 257 for 9.
