Josh Dawodu could sign new Sheff Wed deal

Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore is reportedly keen for Owls youngster Josh Dawodu to sign a new deal at the club this summer.

The Lowdown: Promising Sheff Wed youngster

The 20-year-old has been a key member of Wednesday’s Under-23 side this season, but he was also part of the senior squad on occasions, despite not making an appearance.

Moore is now planning for life in League One next season, with a host of established players out of contract and younger individuals potentially being trusted, and it seems Dawodu could be one of those.

The Latest: Dawodu set for new deal?

The Sheffield Star are claiming that the defender could extend his stay at Hillsborough this summer, with his current contract expiring this month.

Taking to Twitter, journalist Joe Crann revealed that ‘Josh Dawodu is keen to sign a new deal’ at the club, nine very encouraging words.

He confirmed the starlet has held ‘positive talks with Moore’ about remaining with the Owls for at least the whole of next season.

“This is positive… I’m told Josh Dawodu is keen to sign a new deal at SWFC, and is in a training camp currently to make sure he’s fit and firing for preseason. Dawodu, 20, is highly-regarded, and has had positive talks with Moore about his future,” Crann said in full.

The Verdict: Planning for the future

It is time for Moore to build his own team and stop depending on older players, signing his own choices and giving young individuals an opportunity to shine.

Of course, an element of experience will be required, in order for Wednesday earn a return to the Championship immediately, but it is refreshing to see that Dawodu looks to be part of the manager’s plans.

Julian Borner has been linked with a return to Germany, possibly joining Bundesliga 2 side Hannover 96, meaning Dawodu’s first-team hopes could be further enhanced.

Postcard: Justin Ontong – Guts and Big Match Temperment

This is my first tour with the senior SA Cricket team and its great to be with the guys practicing playing and mingling at the highest level. However, this is not my first trip to the Caribbean as I was here last year in September with the "A" side.I joined the guys in Jamaica during the last test match and played my first warm-up game against the Jamaican XI at Sabina Park. The game went quite well and fortunately I was picked for the first one-day match against the West Indies. So, my debut one-day international turned out to be a humdinger of a match going all the way to the wire where the Windies won it off the last ball.I think it took some guts and BMT for Ridley Jacobs to have hit the winning runs the way he did and hopefully in one of the games to come it will be me or one of the our guys in a similar situation winning it for our team.I was quite nervous at the start of the match but after facing my first ball it felt like a whole load of pressure was been taken off my shoulders.I felt that my bowling didn’t really go that well and I could have done better. Perhaps I bowled a few too many short balls and also lacked a bit of experience when bowling to Lara and Hooper, who between them have played around 350 one-day matches. They put on about 70 runs in their partnership and they were going along quite easily at that stage until AD got Lara out caught magnificently by the one-and-only Jonty Rhodes. In the field, I felt that I wasn’t too bad and I’m glad that I contributed with the run-out of Ricardo Powell. One thing however that I did notice was the behaviour of the crowds whom I found extremely abusive. But I guess this is cricket and it happens all over the world. This is now my first visit to Antigua and its one of the better islands that I have come across in the Caribbean. It’s quite similar to Barbados with lots of sights to see fun activities here in the hotel and long white beaches with warm water.Andre Nel and I went for a spin on a canoe and also swam a bit in the sea. Thereafter, we had a few fruit punches at the bar and are just enjoying the sun and warm weather and relaxed atmosphere. However, later this afternoon and tomorrow its back to business and I’ll be back in the practice swing of things preparing for the second match on Wednesday.I’m rooming with Makhaya at the moment and this is quite a change from my previous roomie in Jamaica who was Boeta Dippenaar. Its very different having Makhaya now as he is very active and can’t keep still whereas Boeta is a lot more quiet and likes to relax and read in the room.Until another next time this is Justin Ontong signing off for CricInfo.

Kashinath Khadkikar hits a brilliant century

Watford interested in Arnaut Danjuma

Watford may be weighing up a move to bring Arnaut Danjuma to Vicarage Road this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Sky Sports, with Simeon Gholam suggesting that Cristiano Giaretta could be tempted into making a move for the Bournemouth forward ahead of the Hornets’ Premier League campaign next season.

Gholam writes: “[Watford] may also have a keen eye on Bournemouth’s Arnaut Danjuma to give some balance on the left side and add some extra flair and goals.”

Giaretta must move

Considering just how impressive the £10.8m-rated winger was for Jonathan Woodgate’s side this season, the addition of the 24-year-old to Xisco Munoz’s attacking arsenal at Watford is certainly a mouthwatering prospect for fans of the club.

Over his 33 Championship appearances this term, Danjuma scored 15 goals, registered seven assists and created eight big chances, as well as making an average of 1.5 key passes and taking 2.2 shots per game, culminating in a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.17 – ranking him as the Cherries’ best performer in the second tier.

For comparison, over Ismaila Sarr’s 39 league fixtures this season, the 23-year-old scored 13 goals, provided four assists and created 11 big chances, in addition to making an average of 1.1 key passes and taking 2.2 shots per game, seeing the Watford star earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.21 – ranking him as the club’s second-best performer in the Championship.

As such, the potential of playing Sarr on one wing and Danjuma on the other in the Hornets’ Premier League campaign next season would appear to be an extremely frightening prospect for a great many top-flight defenders, and one that would considerably boost the chances of Xisco’s side retaining their status in the first division come next summer.

So, it would seem a very wise move for Giaretta to do all he can to convince the £28k-per-week player who Woodgate claimed is “magic” of a move to Vicarage Road in the upcoming transfer window, as the 24-year-old very much appears to have the ability to make a real difference in the Hornets’ Premier League jaunt.

McAvennie excited by Martinez links to Spurs

Speaking to Football Insider, pundit Frank McAvennie has been left excited by a Tottenham Hotspur managerial development as Roberto Martinez has been placed on the shortlist to replace Jose Mourinho.

The Lowdown: Martinez linked to Spurs

The Spaniard has been sporadically linked to Spurs over this last month with Football Insider claiming he has been added to the managerial shortlist in north London.

As well as that report, journalist and reliable source of information Alasdair Gold said on his YouTube channel (May 5) that he is ‘certainly one’ the Lilywhites have been looking at alongside Graham Potter.

It is also claimed Spurs chiefs ‘really like’ his style of football amid reports he has entered the fray (Alasdair Gold).

In reaction to the recent development of Martinez entering Tottenham’s shortlist, former West Ham United and Celtic striker McAvennie has certainly been left in awe.

“Wow, he’d be a great appointment,” he told Football Insider.

“Martinez has certainly got the stature to go into Tottenham. He’s worked with the biggest players on the planet with Belgium.

“It won’t frighten him. I’d imagine Martinez misses the day-to-day, the training with the boys.

“It’ll be great when you’ve got your players there but a good manager wants to be doing things every day.

“His stock is so high but Tottenham is a big club.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-story-roundup/” title=”Spurs story roundup!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: McAvennie right to be excited

Of all the managers linked to Tottenham over this past month, Martinez is arguably one of the names who have garnered the least discussion despite his experience both in the Premier League and at international level.

He even guided Belgium to a 2018 World Cup semi-final place where they only narrowly lost out to eventual winners France.

On the road, his Red Devils side knocked out five-time world champions Brazil in an impressive performance.

The 47-year-old also has trophy-winning experience in England, clinching a memorable FA Cup triumph for Wigan in 2013 as they upset Manchester City at Wembley.

His accolades, therefore, could highlight the fact he is a strong outside contender.

Spurs: Tanganga endures England nightmare

Tottenham Hotspur gem Japhet Tanganga endured a nightmare as England U21s crashed out of the Euros on Wednesday night.

Aidy Boothroyd’s young Three Lions side defeated Croatia 2-1 but went out on goal difference having needed to win by a two-goal advantage and hope that Portugal were victorious against Switzerland.

Domagoj Bradaric fired home a heartbreaking 90th-minute consolation goal to dump Tanganga and co out at the group stage.

And the 22-year-old Spurs prospect had a torrid night.

Tanganga was comfortably England’s poorest player as per SofaScore ratings, as he was graded a 6.3 – not only the lowest of any English defender but the worst of all the Three Lions’ starters.

The 6-foot defender was frequently involved throughout the match, tying for the most touches (67) of the ball alongside centre-back partner Ben Wilmot but he struggled to do much with such influence.

His 69% passing accuracy from 55 attempts was the second-lowest of any England starter, whilst he also lost possession 19 times, meaning he handed the ball back to the game-chasing Croatians once every 3.5 touches.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more” title= Read this week’s latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more…”]

Tanganga struggled to adapt to their passing play, failing to win a single ground duel, on top of being dribbled past on one occasion and committing one foul, via SofaScore.

90min were equally scathing in their verdict of his performance on Wednesday, after giving him a 5/10 for his troubles, they claimed: “Looked a bit stiff and found himself scurrying back on a couple of occasions after being beaten all too easily.”

According to Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, Tanganga’s future in the game lies at full-back rather than the middle, so it was certainly a strange decision from Boothroyd to move him, having featured on the right last time out.

Speaking in November, the Portuguese told reporters, via football.london: “Tanganga for me is a full-back. A multi-functional defensive player but [firstly] a full-back.”

Indeed, the 22-year-old’s last start for the north London giants saw him start, excel and keep a clean sheet on the right-hand side of defence.

Tanganga undoubtedly has huge potential and is likely to play a big part in Spurs’ future over the coming seasons but on this week’s disastrous evidence, it certainly seems like Mourinho knows what he’s doing with the versatile defender.

THFC: Mourinho keen on Vlahovic

According to a recent report, Tottenham Hotspur are keeping tabs on centre-forward Dusan Vlahovic ahead of a potential summer swoop.

The report by Italian publication La Nazione (via Sport Witness) claims that a number of clubs, including AS Roma from Serie A, Borussia Dortmund from the Bundesliga and Tottenham from the Premier League, are monitoring the situation of the Fiorentina striker ahead of the summer transfer window.

It is claimed that Jose Mourinho’s side have specifically turned their “spotlight” on the £14.4,-rated 21-year-old, for whom Fiorentina are said to be prepared for a barrage of offers this summer, with the Serie A side reportedly demanding between €50m (£43m) and €60m (£52m) to part with the forward.

Transfer Tavern Take

The reported interest in Vlahovic comes as no surprise, as so far this season, the 1.9m (6 foot 3) striker has impressed over his 26 Serie A appearances for Cesare Prandelli’s side, scoring 12 goals and providing one assist.

With Carlos Vinicius, Tottenham’s current backup centre-forward for Harry Kane, struggling to make any great impression on the Spurs side, having scored no goals over his seven Premier League appearances since joining on a season-long loan from Benfica last October, perhaps a move for a more prolific striker this summer would not be the worst of ideas for Tottenham.
