Spurs: O’Rourke makes fresh Ndombele claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has made a fresh behind-the-scenes claim involving Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele and manager Antonio Conte.

The Lowdown: Days numbered?

Recent reports suggest that Spurs’ club-record signing may well be on the way out of north London permanently this summer as Conte makes his decision.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Evening Standard and Football Insider both back that Tottenham’s manager doesn’t see a future for Ndombele at N17, so much so that the Lilywhites will entertain offers from clubs to take him off their hands permanently.

Ndombele parting company may well be a determining factor in Conte having money to spend this summer as the club aim to boost their transfer kitty as much as possible.

The Latest: O’Rourke makes fresh Ndombele claim…

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke believes there may have been a behind-the-scenes fall out with Conte, with the pair not seeing ‘eye-to-eye’.

He explained: “It seemed him and Conte didn’t see eye-to-eye, so they tried to rush through this January loan move back to Lyon, which was the only move they could do.

“In the summer it will give them maybe more time to explore and see if they can seek a permanent exit. It’ll all come down to price and what Spurs are looking for, but I’m sure there will be interested clubs and Lyon would love to make it permanent.”

The Verdict: Time to sell…

The France international will continue earning a salary of around £10,400,000-per-year upon returning to Spurs from his loan, if Lyon don’t make his move permanent.

An arguable drain on Spurs’ wage bill an overall funds, it is in transfer chief Fabio Paratici and chairman Daniel Levy’s best interest to successfully negotiate a sale as one of their first actions of the summer window.

His ability is obvious, with Tim Sherwood calling Ndombele a ‘maverick’ and Son Heung-min once branding the midfielder ‘unbelievable’, but his skills have always been marred by questions surrounding his application.

No-ball controversy a distant memory for Murali

Muttiah Muralitharan has forgiven the umpire Darrell Hair and forgotten the no-ball call that threatened to derail his career

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Oct-2010Muttiah Muralitharan has forgiven the umpire Darrell Hair and forgotten the no-ball call that threatened to derail his career. Murali was the victim at the 1995-96 Boxing Day Test but went on to take a record 800 Test wickets before retiring in July.”I have forgiven [Hair] and forgotten,” Murali told the Courier-Mail. “I had been very upset with him but I have let it go. I am not upset with him. People do make mistakes and I think he made a mistake. My action has been cleared. But I’m not going to look at the past any more.”Murali is back in Australia for a limited-overs series and his team-mates are excited to have him as they look to next year’s World Cup. The campaign involves a Twenty20 international and three ODIs, and Murali knows what to expect from a small segment of local supporters.”It has been a bit difficult here for me sometimes but mainly it has just been one or two people in the crowd saying some things,” he said. “That is part of the game and as a sportsman you just have to accept that some people just don’t like you.”What I really didn’t like was the comments [the former prime minister John] Howard made [in 2004]. That was why I didn’t come on the next tour here. From someone in his position, that was worse than anything the crowd said.” The incident was blamed as one of reasons Howard was not appointed as ICC vice-president in June.

Rangers player ratings vs Braga

Glasgow Rangers went through to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League with a 3-1 win at home on Thursday night.

Two goals from James Tavernier and one from Kemar Roofe in extra-time was enough to see off Braga in the end, who had two men sent off.

It was not always plain-sailing for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team at Ibrox, as Braga managed to take the game to extra-time late on despite being a man light, while they were guilty of squandering a lot of chances, managing a whopping 31 shots on goal in total, but only five on target.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As such, The Transfer Tavern have now used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who the three worst performers (to have played at least 45 minutes) were for the hosts on the night – could these men be looking over their shoulders regarding their places in GvB’s XI?

Calvin Bassey

Given a 6.8 overall rating, Bassey ranked as the Teddy Bears’ third-worst player.

The central defender lost out on four of his duels, while he also failed to record a single interception or tackle, and gave the ball away a total of 18 times.

Kemar Roofe

Despite his goal in extra-time, Roofe was only given a 6.7 rating.

The striker lost a team-high 12 of his duels, and was also off target with three of his other efforts on goal, missing two big chances in the process.

Roofe also made no successful dribbles, interceptions, tackles or key passes, and committed a team-high three fouls, losing possession ten times in total.

Allan McGregor

Perhaps unluckily given he did not have too much to do, McGregor was ranked as the Light Blues’ worst performer with a 6.5 rating.

The goalkeeper did concede from one of the only two shots on target that he faced though, and gave the ball away needlessly on seven separate occasions.

Everton make Idrissa Gueye move

‘Everton have a made a move to re-sign’ Idrissa Gueye from Paris Saint-Germain but a deal is looking ‘unlikely’, according to The Athletic’s Simon Johnson.

The lowdown

Everton have made three signings so far in January, striking permanent deals for full-backs Vitaliy Mykolenko and Nathan Patterson and bringing in winger Anwar El-Ghazi on loan.

Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek is set to become their fourth winter coup, with the Dutchman undergoing a medical on Monday morning, but it seems the appointment of Frank Lampard as manager could yet be greeted with more than one addition.

Gueye spent three years (2016-2019) at Everton before a £30m switch to the Ligue 1 outfit.

The latest

Johnson took to Twitter on Monday morning to reveal that Everton have launched a late offensive to try and bring the Senegal midfielder back to Goodison Park, although it remains up in the air whether or not their efforts will be successful.

He tweeted: “It’s true that Everton have made a move to re-sign their former midfielder Idrissa Gueye from PSG. But was told last night that it was unlikely to happen. Things can always change though on deadline day.”

The verdict

Gueye appears to be an important part of PSG’s squad, so you can understand if they’re reluctant to let their £11.7m-rated asset leave. He has started the majority of their Ligue 1 matches so far this season, along with five of their six Champions League group games.

However, the 32-year-old has less than 18 months left on his £99,000-per-week contract, and that may factor into the Parisians’ thinking.

It’s worth noting that Gueye is currently preparing for an Africa Cup of Nations semi-final with Senegal, and that could make a deadline day move more difficult, despite Everton’s best efforts for a last-gasp coup.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs still willing to sell Steven Bergwijn to Ajax

Speaking on De Telegraaf’s podcast (as shared by Sport Witness), journalist Mike Verweij claims that Ajax will make one final attempt to sign Steven Bergwijn, as they have received ‘signals from Spurs that he is still nominated to leave’.

The Lowdown: Bergwijn’s future uncertain

Bergwijn threw his Spurs future into the air as he fired in two stoppage time goals in 80 seconds to snatch Antonio Conte’s side three points in a thrilling 3-2 win over Leicester City.

Before this, Bergwijn looked like he was heading for the exit door, as Spurs were willing to listen to offers for the Dutchman.

The club had rejected a £15 million bid from Ajax, but only because they were hoping to recoup as much of the £27 million fee that they paid for him two years ago.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Spurs still willing to sell

According to Verweij (translated by Sport Witness), Ajax have not admitted defeat in their pursuit of the winger, and Tottenham still seem keen on finding a deal for Bergwijn’s departure.

Speaking on De Telegraaf’s podcast, Verweij said: “I think they will make a final attempt for Bergwijn.

“They have received signals from Spurs that he is still nominated to leave. The offer must then exceed twenty million (£16.7m).”

The Verdict: Silly to let him go?

With the 24-year-old having turned Spurs’ fortune around against Leicester and with Alasdair Gold hailing him as a ‘rare bright spot’ in the defeat at Chelsea, it throws in the question whether Conte and Fabio Paratici would be silly to let the Netherlands international leave the club.

The potential arrival of Adama Traore from Wolves may be what is leading Spurs to look to offload the player to Ajax in order to recoup some funds, but reports have suggested Conte wants Traore to play the right-wing-back role, so it’s not exactly like-for-like.

Therefore, Bergwijn’s future at Tottenham remains uncertain, and it certainly feels like a risk to cash in for around €20m (£16.7m) given the lack of other firepower in the squad.

Leeds United scouting Feyenoord’s Marcos Senesi

Leeds United are scouting Feyenoord star Marcos Senesi as they plot a potential move for the centre-back.

What’s the story?

According to 90min, the Whites are one of a number of Premier League sides, including the likes of Newcastle, Manchester United, Tottenham and Aston Villa who have watched the defender in recent weeks.

The report adds that: “Feyenoord are currently trying to entice Senesi to sign a new deal as he has just 18-months left on his current contract, but it remains to be seen if they can fend off the growing queue of suitors.”

Better than Liam Cooper

Dubbed a “gladiator”, Senesi looks to be the kind of ball-playing centre-back that Bielsa would surely love to have at Elland Road.

A profile done by Live Score noted: “Since joining from San Lorenzo in 2019, the 24-year-old has quietly developed into one of the most progressive defenders in Europe.

“Impressive with and without the ball, the Argentine centre-back completed more clearances (3.5 per 90 minutes) than any other player across Feyenoord’s two Europa Conference League games this season, as well as having the best passing accuracy (84.76%).”And, when you compare some of his key stats to that of club captain Liam Cooper, it’s the Argentine who favours considerably better. As per Whoscored, Senesi averages a far better average match rating than the Scot (7.09 to 6.81), while he commits far fewer fouls per outing and catches opposition strikers more times on average than Cooper too. And, Senesi also wins a higher percentage of his duels (68% to 63%), and completes more dribbles per game too – making him very much someone who could complement Diego Llorente at the heart of the Leeds defence. Those stats don’t even mention how much better Senesi is on the ball, having registered more assists, averaging more key passes per game, and also boasting a far better passing accuracy for passes made into the opposition half. The £16.2m-rated star could represent a real upgrade on Cooper.Meanwhile, Phil Hay has dropped a Leeds United transfer update…

Forgotten Panesar lends a hand

This time last year Monty Panesar was still his country’s first-choice spinner, but he has slipped so far down the pecking order that questions are circulating as to whether he has an international future

As England began their preparations for the final Test against South Africa a forgotten, but instantly recognisable, face was at nets to offer a helping hand. This time last year Monty Panesar was still his country’s first-choice spinner, but he has slipped so far down the pecking order that questions are circulating as to whether he has an international future.Panesar has spent the English winter with the Lions, the Johannesburg-based franchise, trying to recapture the magic that drew comparisons with Bishan Bedi as he became a match-winner for England. From the outside, his statistics don’t suggest a resurgence is near – 15 wickets at 39.06 in six games – but they are a noticeable improvement on his meagre 2009 haul, where he managed 18 at 59.44 in 13 Championship matches for Northamptonshire. Either way, he has made a positive impression on his latest team.”He started with us pretty much in a negative mindset, not much confidence in himself and we just gave him some space to find himself,” Dave Nosworthy, the Lions coach, told Cricinfo. “He was getting a lot of information from so many different people and he needed some space.”We’ve allowed him that and tried to nurture him as much as possible. We have given him the opportunities he has needed and he has been magnificent for us. We’ve got everything we have needed to get out of him and he’s bowling well so that’s quite exciting.”In between whiles, Panesar has also moved counties to Sussex to help rekindle his career, but the prospects of an international recall in the near future don’t look good. His last performance in an England shirt remains a match-saving one as he and James Anderson survived 69 deliveries against Australia at Cardiff. Without Panesar, the Ashes series would probably have gone the other way. But not for the reasons that anyone ever imagined. But, however much the batting of No. 11s has become vital for England with the recent efforts of Graham Onions, Panesar just wasn’t performing well enough with the ball to merit his retention in the side. Graeme Swann has now made the No. 1 position his own with a stellar series in South Africa, to follow a productive season in England, and Adil Rashid was selected as his No. 2 for both the Test and one-dayers.When Swann was a minor injury worry with a side strain, James Tredwell, the Kent offspinner, was the man called up as cover because the selectors wanted “a like-for-like” replacement. Panesar, it seems, didn’t even enter into their thoughts even though he was already in South Africa, because when the selectors wanted a third spinner for the recently named Lions squad – albeit for a one-day tournament – they went for Yorkshire’s David Wainwright.Last year, prior to the Ashes, Shane Warne said that Panesar hadn’t developed at all during his career – “He’s stayed the same, he’s one of those guys that has played one Test 30 times” – while Michael Vaughan has said how he would set “university fields” when left to his own devices.Although Nosworthy believes Panesar has “been able to find his own game” during his stint in South Africa, he feels he still needs to do more for himself. “I think he relies on people telling him how to bowl and what to do and he’s the sort of guy that needs to be making his own decisions at this time in his career,” he said.”He needs to start deciding what fields he wants and how he wants to get batsmen out. Every spinner is different so he’s got a uniqueness to himself which he must try to make as good as possible without trying to be anyone else.”The one glimmer of hope for Panesar has been the lack of opportunity for Rashid during the South Africa tour, after he was dropped following one expensive over in a Twenty20. With a Test series against Bangladesh in March, England will want the option of playing two spinners and it’s ideal if they turn the ball opposite ways. However, it is still a long shot for Panesar and his stint in the nets is likely to be as close to the England set-up as he gets for some time.
