Crystal Palace must sign Anthony Martial

Crystal Palace could create a formidable attacking duo after they were linked with a move for Manchester United striker Anthony Martial.

The controversial 25-year-old has often divided opinion during his time in English football, and it seems as though his days at Old Trafford are numbered.

And earlier in the week, he was linked with a shock move to Selhurst Park.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Palace are interested in securing Martial’s services over the coming months as new manager Patrick Vieira looks to complete the overhaul of his first-team squad.

It’s claimed that the Red Devils have placed a £40m price tag on the France international, but it could be a price worth paying to pair him with compatriot Odsonne Edouard in south London.

While his talent and natural ability has rarely been disputed, Martial’s work rate and consistency have often come into question since United splashed out a significant fee to prize him away from Monaco back in 2015.

It seemed as if the attacking talent was finally going to fulfil his potential after he enjoyed a fabulous 2019/20 campaign, bagging 23 goals and providing a further 12 assists in 48 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions.

His outstanding displays caught the eye of several impressed onlookers, including former United title-winner Robin van Persie, who claimed that the Frenchman is a “world-class” player.

“Martial always have an eye for his teammates and that’s what sets him apart from the others. That’s why I think he’s a world-class player,” said the Dutchman.

However, he was unable to build on that standout campaign last term and has seen himself fall even further down the pecking order last United this time around.

The acquisitions of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo have limited Martial to just 247 minutes of action in the opening weeks of the current campaign, signalling that an imminent exit could be on the cards.

And the prospect of Martial linking up with his French compatriot Odsonne Edouard at Selhurst Park is surely a potentiality that the Palace supporters would love to see.

Both men are capable of playing either on the left-wing or through the middle, meaning intriguing rotations and exciting interchanges could become the norm at Palace, should he make the move.

It remains to be seen whether the capital club’s hierarchy follows up their reported interest up with a concrete offer, but it’s certainly a deal that chairman Steve Parish should be considering if he has the required funds available.

And, in other news…Imagine him and Olise: Parish must revive Palace interest in £18m-rated magician

Aston Villa: Fans react to Leon Bailey update

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith provided an update on injured winger Leon Bailey ahead of the club’s trip to Tottenham on Sunday.

And a number of Villa supporters have been reacting to the news on social media.

Bailey starred on his first Villa Park appearance, netting his first goal for the club in a 3-0 victory over Everton.

However, after coming on as a substitute, the Jamaican had to be replaced with a thigh problem and hasn’t been seen since.

He missed the win at Old Trafford over Manchester United, with the club confirming a thigh strain which is set to keep him out until after the international break.

The 24-year-old won’t make the trip to north London on Sunday, however, Smith found the time to give an update on his situation in his pre-match press conference.

Smith admitted that he is ‘hopeful’ Bailey will return to Bodymoor Heath training during the international break, with a further assessment expected.

Villa shared Smith’s comments regarding Bailey on their official Twitter page on Friday. This is what these Villa fans had to say in reply…

Celtic: Ramon Vega tipped as possible Dominic McKay replacement

Former Celtic centre-back Ramon Vega has been named as a possible contender to replace Dominic McKay as Parkhead CEO, The Herald report.

The Lowdown: McKay’s exit

News of McKay’s Parkhead departure was confirmed on Friday, with the Hoops revealing it was down to personal reasons.

The former chief executive was only in the position for 72 days, with Michael Nicholson appointed on an initial temporary basis.

Nicholson is one of five contenders to land the job on a full-time basis in a report by The Herald’s Ewan Paton, and the sports reporter has thrown in a former Hoops player into the mix.

The Latest: Vega links

Vega’s combination of football and business knowledge could be the ‘perfect’ blend at Parkhead, according to Paton.

The reporter states that Vega has worked in an advisory role for a number of clubs across Europe.

Paton highlighted Edwin van der Sar as an example of a former player having a positive impact in the boardroom, with the ex-goalkeeper Ajax’s CEO.

The Verdict: Replacement ASAP?

With McKay’s exit confirmed last week, if Celtic want a new man in, it could be handy to get cracking as soon as possible.

Vega studied a business degree during his playing days and is still keeping an eye on football, so he could be a shrewd option to approach over the vacant position.

As Paton mentions, van der Sar has helped Ajax off the pitch when it comes to making profits on numerous players, so Vega could have a good balance when it comes to Ange Postecoglou and Dermot Desmond.

Juventus want Everton’s Allan

Everton could face a battle to keep hold of key midfielder Allan over the coming months after he was linked with a move to Italian giants Juventus.

What’s the story?

Reports in Italy claim that Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri is eyeing a move for the tough-tackling 30-year-old as he aims to overhaul his engine room in Turin.

According to the report, Allegri is keen on bringing in proven Serie A talent who will take no time to adapt to the demands of the league, and as a result, has identified Allan as a possible target.

“Allegri asked for a footballer whom they know very well from Napoli because he played some excellent football years in Campania: I refer to Allan,” said reliable journalist Fabio Santini via Area Napoli (as relayed by the Liverpool ECHO).

“As a partial counterpart, (Aaron) Ramsey could instead end up in England.”

Everton fans will be gutted

Allan enjoyed five successful years in Naples before arriving on Merseyside in the summer of 2020, making 212 appearances in all competitions for the Azzurri, winning the Italian Cup along the way.

He soon established himself as a fans favourite at Goodison Park due to his full-blooded displays at the base of the Everton midfield, and his departure would leave the club’s supporters feeling gutted.

The Brazil international’s complete displays in the centre of pitch helped bring stability to the Toffees play last term, and his underlying numbers illustrate the influence he had over their play.

As per WhoScored, Allan significantly outperformed his Everton teammates when it came to tackles, averaging a whopping 3.3 per Premier League game throughout 2020/21, with Lucas Digne’s tally of 2.1 coming in second.

But the South American was also composed when in possession of the ball. Of his teammates that started three or more league fixtures, only centre-backs Yerry Mina and Michael Keane had a higher pass completion ratio than Allan’s 85.6%, illustrating his ability both with and without the ball.

Therefore, losing the £19.8m-rated dynamo would be a big blow to Rafael Benitez’s ambitions at Everton, and the Spaniard will surely be hoping to keep hold of his key man for the foreseeable future.

Wolves loan Gibbs-White to Sheffield Utd

Many Wolves fans have been left fuming as some news emerged on Morgan Gibbs-White.

As per the official website of the Midlands club, the central midfield player signed a new long-term deal before signing for Sheffield United on loan for the rest of the 2021/22 season.

Gibbs-White had already made a good impression for the Molineux faithful this season, scoring one goal and making one assist in three games in total over all competitions so far (Transfermarkt).

However, his loan departure has now left Bruno Lage a little light in midfield, with their being a question mark over why he was allowed to go without a suitable replacement lined up.

Nonetheless, the Wanderers will have to stick with what they have got until the January transfer window comes along.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has introduced a new system for measuring player performance, with a Most Valuable Player (MVP) initiative similar to the one used in England. The MVP will be promoted in New Zealand by the New Zealand Cricket Players Association (NZCPA) in association with NZC. Heath Mills, executive manager for the NZCPA is excited about the new plan.”Based on the successful MVP programme launched in England by the PCA in 2007, the system has been developed by players, for the players and is truly reflective of their view of the game – it is the players’ statistic,” he said.”We have worked closely with the PCA in England to secure the rights to the MVP system. [We]are confident its introduction will not only take fan and player involvement in the domestic season to the next level, but that it is also the best indicator to date of a players overall performance and contribution to his team during the season.”The MVP works on a cumulative points system that rewards players for every run scored, every wicket taken and every catch held throughout the season. A player also achieves bonus points based on other criteria important to the outcome of the match.Dimitri Mascarenhas, the Hampshire captain who will join Otago this season, said the MVP system has been warmly received by the players. “All the lads look at it to judge who is doing well. The MVP is a really good platform to see personally how you are going.”NZC CEO Justin Vaughan added: “Cricket is a game that requires players to be skilled at multiple disciplines, and for the first time the MVP system allows us to directly compare the value of each of these”.

Celtic: Giakoumakis to undergo Hoops medical

VVV-Venlo striker Georgios Giakoumakis will undergo his Celtic medical in Paris on Sunday, according to journalist Johnny Georgopoulos.

The Lowdown: Fee agreed

The Hoops have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old for almost two weeks now.

Ange Postecoglou personally called the striker over a deal and an initial fee of €2.5m has been agreed on between the two clubs.

Giakoumakis, on just €750-a-week (£642) with Venlo, could well become Dominic McKay’s 10th summer signing in his first window as CEO, and it seems as if a move has taken a further step forward ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

The Latest: Sunday medical

According to Georgopoulos, Giakoumakis will undergo his medical in France on Sunday.

The journalist revealed that he has accepted Celtic’s offer and that it would now be a ‘big surprise’ if he didn’t make the move to Glasgow.

The Verdict: Edouard to depart?

With Giakoumakis now likely to join Celtic, that could mean that Odsonne Edouard will get the Parkhead exit he has wanted since April.

The Hoops have Crystal Palace, Bordeaux and Rubin Kazan all interested in a late auction for the Frenchman, and it seems as if a deal could be on the cards with the 23-year-old into the final 12 months of his contract.

The pending arrival of Giakoumakis may well give Edouard the green light to move away, so it looks set to be an interesting last few days of the window.
