Kervezee carries Derbyshire into ascendancy

Scorecard
Alexei Kervezee laid on a family celebration with a maiden first-class century as Worcestershire systematically put Derbyshire on the rack in the County Championship at New Road. The 20-year-old batsman’s Rotterdam-based parents were in the crowd when the milestone was reached during the home side’s progress to a declaration at 559 for 8, the biggest total in Division Two this season. After being kept in the field for 142 overs, Derbyshire required 410 to avoidthe follow-on and immediately they were in trouble, collapsing to 138 for 6against an impressive Worcestershire seam attack.Richard Jones, Alan Richardson and Jack Shantry found much more life in thepitch and five catches were safely held, from wicketkeeper Ben Scott to Daryl Mitchell and Vikram Solanki in the slips.Only Chris Rogers, with seven fours and a six in reaching 50, made any headwayin the top order until he was well taken by Mitchell for the first of twowickets in four balls for Richardson.Derbyshire’s troubles were in complete contrast to Worcestershire’sfree-and-easy batting against a lacklustre attack.Kervezee, dropped first ball on the opening day, joined three other Dutchplayers who scored centuries in the County Championship – Roland Lefebvre(Somerset), Bas Zuiderent (Sussex) and Ryan ten Doeschate (Essex). In making 130 in a highly entertaining innings, spanning 175 balls andincluding 15 fours and three sixes, he overcame the curse of the nervous 90s.His highest first-class score for Holland is 98 and in his last match forWorcestershire he was dismissed for 99 against Leicestershire at Grace Road. For one heart-stopping moment it seemed he would suffer the same fate againstDerbyshire. Again on 99, he went for a big shot off Robin Peterson but failed toconnect. Fortunately he retained his balance and survived as wicketkeeper TomPoynton appealed for a stumping. In Peterson’s next over, Kervezee picked the right ball to be swept tomidwicket and, with the elusive hundred finally on the board from 150 balls, hecontinued his swashbuckling performance. The end was typical of his approach to batting. In successive balls from TomLungley, he could have been caught in front of the pavilion and then smashed acatch to Peterson at mid-on.Derbyshire took two other wickets in the morning. James Cameron, making hisfirst-class debut, went for 25 when chasing a ball from Steffan Jones and BenSmith was leg-before to Peterson. The hard-worked left-arm spinner claimed two more wickets after lunch, finishing with 4 for 170 from 47 overs, but only after a partnership of 67 byScott (40 not out) and Gareth Andrew (33).

Victoria and Western Australia in tight wrestle

Victoria 199 and 2 for 80 lead Western Australia 274 (Pomersbach 74, Ronchi 55, Pattinson 3-70, Wright 3-72) by 5 runs

Luke Pomersbach delivered first-innings points for Western Australia but Victoria have not given up on an outright win as they push for a home Sheffield Shield final. Half-centuries to Pomersbach and Ronchi gave the Warriors a 75-run advantage but by stumps Victoria had sneaked back into the lead with eight wickets in hand. The Bushrangers were 2 for 80, with Nick Jewell well set on 32 and the stand-in captain David Hussey unbeaten on 39. Chris Rogers and Aaron Finch had both fallen for single-figure scores to leave Victoria in a hole at 2 for 15 before the recovery, which was all the more important as their rivals for the hosting rights for the decider, Queensland, looked set for victory in Brisbane. They had the chance to snare first-innings points when the Warriors stumbled to 6 for 136 after Damien Wright picked up Michael Swart and Mitchell Marsh from consecutive balls, both lbw not playing a shot. But Pomersbach and Ronchi combined for a 103-run stand that pushed the home side past Victoria’s modest total.Darren Pattinson eventually removed both men, Pomersbach lbw for 74 and Ronchi bowled for 55, and the tail pushed Western Australia to 274. Wright finished with 3 for 72 from 28 overs and Pattinson collected 3 for 70.

Virender Sehwag "would love" to bat at No.4

Virender Sehwag, the Indian opener, has said he aims to play 100 Tests before his retirement and wishes to bat at No.4, even though he may have to wait until Sachin Tendulkar, who occupies that slot, ends his career

Virender Sehwag thinks he could have been more successful in the middle order•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Virender Sehwag, the Indian opener, has said he “would love” to bat at No.4, even though he may have to wait until Sachin Tendulkar, who occupies that slot, ends his career. Sehwag was speaking at the ESPNcricinfo Awards ceremony in Jaipur, where he won the prize for best Test innings for the second year running. His audacious 293 against Sri Lanka in Mumbai was chosen over four other nominations shortlisted for the award.”I would love to bat at number four. I know I would not get that till Sachin retires. But I can wait,” Sehwag said, despite his enormous success at the top of the order. “I still would like to bat in the middle order. It’s difficult to field one-and-half days and then come out to bat in 10 minutes. When you bat at No. 6 like (MS) Dhoni, it allows you some rest. I have been successful as an opener but who knows, maybe I would have been more successful in the middle order.”Sehwag’s brutal innings against Sri Lanka included 40 fours and seven sixes, and set up an innings win for India, propelling them to the No.1 ranking in Tests. He had tremendous success in 2009 – an average of 108.98 in six Tests – and in the four Tests he’s played this year, he’s already managed two centuries. Sehwag said his form would only get better in the years to come. “I’m 31 and I think I’m playing well. And I would get only better in the next three-four years.”Sehwag defended his naturally aggressive approach to batting, saying there were risks involved even if he opted to play more cautiously. “People say I take too many risks. But the fact is, there is risk involved in every shot. You can get out trying to defend a ball as well. At times, people tell me to leave ball outside the off-stump. But some of them can jag back and get you out if you don’t play shots. I think if you think so much, you simply cannot bat,” he said.”In my case, it would become risky if I try to become defensive, since my technique is not that good. I think in a different way. When I grew up, I tried to score off every ball, be it a 10-over-match, a 20-over or even a Test match. If I stay in the wicket for say about 30 minutes, I want to make the most of it and score maximum runs possible. You never know when you get out, try to score as much possible before that.”Sehwag added he wished to play 100 Tests for India before retiring from the format. “I want to play 100 Test matches and once I have done that, I may retire from Test cricket,” he said.

Forgotten Panesar lends a hand

As England began their preparations for the final Test against South Africa a forgotten, but instantly recognisable, face was at nets to offer a helping hand. This time last year Monty Panesar was still his country’s first-choice spinner, but he has slipped so far down the pecking order that questions are circulating as to whether he has an international future.Panesar has spent the English winter with the Lions, the Johannesburg-based franchise, trying to recapture the magic that drew comparisons with Bishan Bedi as he became a match-winner for England. From the outside, his statistics don’t suggest a resurgence is near – 15 wickets at 39.06 in six games – but they are a noticeable improvement on his meagre 2009 haul, where he managed 18 at 59.44 in 13 Championship matches for Northamptonshire. Either way, he has made a positive impression on his latest team.”He started with us pretty much in a negative mindset, not much confidence in himself and we just gave him some space to find himself,” Dave Nosworthy, the Lions coach, told Cricinfo. “He was getting a lot of information from so many different people and he needed some space.”We’ve allowed him that and tried to nurture him as much as possible. We have given him the opportunities he has needed and he has been magnificent for us. We’ve got everything we have needed to get out of him and he’s bowling well so that’s quite exciting.”In between whiles, Panesar has also moved counties to Sussex to help rekindle his career, but the prospects of an international recall in the near future don’t look good. His last performance in an England shirt remains a match-saving one as he and James Anderson survived 69 deliveries against Australia at Cardiff. Without Panesar, the Ashes series would probably have gone the other way. But not for the reasons that anyone ever imagined. But, however much the batting of No. 11s has become vital for England with the recent efforts of Graham Onions, Panesar just wasn’t performing well enough with the ball to merit his retention in the side. Graeme Swann has now made the No. 1 position his own with a stellar series in South Africa, to follow a productive season in England, and Adil Rashid was selected as his No. 2 for both the Test and one-dayers.When Swann was a minor injury worry with a side strain, James Tredwell, the Kent offspinner, was the man called up as cover because the selectors wanted “a like-for-like” replacement. Panesar, it seems, didn’t even enter into their thoughts even though he was already in South Africa, because when the selectors wanted a third spinner for the recently named Lions squad – albeit for a one-day tournament – they went for Yorkshire’s David Wainwright.Last year, prior to the Ashes, Shane Warne said that Panesar hadn’t developed at all during his career – “He’s stayed the same, he’s one of those guys that has played one Test 30 times” – while Michael Vaughan has said how he would set “university fields” when left to his own devices.Although Nosworthy believes Panesar has “been able to find his own game” during his stint in South Africa, he feels he still needs to do more for himself. “I think he relies on people telling him how to bowl and what to do and he’s the sort of guy that needs to be making his own decisions at this time in his career,” he said.”He needs to start deciding what fields he wants and how he wants to get batsmen out. Every spinner is different so he’s got a uniqueness to himself which he must try to make as good as possible without trying to be anyone else.”The one glimmer of hope for Panesar has been the lack of opportunity for Rashid during the South Africa tour, after he was dropped following one expensive over in a Twenty20. With a Test series against Bangladesh in March, England will want the option of playing two spinners and it’s ideal if they turn the ball opposite ways. However, it is still a long shot for Panesar and his stint in the nets is likely to be as close to the England set-up as he gets for some time.

Shaking off jet lag, and red umpires

Plays of the Day from the third ODI between India and Australia in Delhi

Last-minute specialist
Graham Manou is used to frenzied debuts. At Edgbaston in the Ashes earlier this year, he knew he would be playing only after the team sheet had been submitted, without his name on it, because Brad Haddin broke his finger after the toss. This time, though, he had more time to get mentally prepared for his ODI debut: Manou reached India at around 2.00 pm on the eve of the match, shrugged off the jetlag and was ready for his debut.Another last-minute specialist
Manou was at least expected to feature in the match today, but Umpire Sanjay Hazare wasn’t. He is not even on the ICC panel of umpires, and the BCCI had anointed him third umpire for the game yesterday. He was given that responsibility only because the foreign umpire, Mark Benson, has been ruled out due to illness, and the third umpire, Shavir Tarapaore, was promoted to on-field duty. At the last minute, though, Hazare and Tarapore exchanged roles.Bodily harm
In the second match, Gautam Gambhir had a charged-up Peter Siddle welcome him with bouncers, one of which hit his shoulder. Today’s blow, though, in front of his home crowd, was nastier. In the 18th over of Australia’s innings, fielding at forward short leg, Gambhir took a full-blooded pull from Ricky Ponting on his neck. Off Gambhir went right away and he didn’t field for the rest of the innings.Slow and low?
With Siddle and Mitchell Johnson bowling, the Kotla pitch suddenly started behaving like a normal track. Johnson even made Virender Sehwag sway away from one that was headed for his face. In the sixth over, though, the pitch revealed its true colour. Siddle, for third match in a row, got Tendulkar playing away from his body and found an edge, but this one fell short of first slip.Men in Red
Commentators sometimes lazily call the umpires Men in Black during ODI matches. Today they couldn’t because the umpires actually wore red shirts, presumably to be able to wear black armbands to mourn the death of David Shepherd.Chilled out message of the day …
… was seen on the giant screen when Sachin Tendulkar flicked Johnson for four in the first over. “Four – so much more chilled out than all that running,” said a Fosters-sponsored message.

Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey impressed vs Arsenal

Newcastle United were handed yet another defeat in the Premier League with a disheartening 2-0 loss against Arsenal at The Emirates Stadium thanks to goals from Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

Despite conceding two goals and not managing to give the travelling Toon supporters a goal of their own to celebrate, one player managed to stand head and shoulders above the rest of his teammates on the day and put in a solid display for the Tyneside club – Jonjo Shelvey.

Before being replaced by Isaac Hayden after 89 minutes, Shelvey had a total of 56 touches of the ball, more than any other Newcastle player on the day and managed to complete 40 of the 42 passes he attempted including four accurate long balls.

The midfielder also managed to prove himself to be a bit of a nuisance for Arsenal’s defensive players by having four shots at goal with three on target as well as managing to the woodwork.

Shelvey additionally played his part defensively as well by making three interceptions, three clearances and blocking one shot in the process.

This latest performance for the Toon earned the 29-year-old an overall match rating of 7.5/10, making him the highest-rated player on the day according to SofaScore, higher than Fabian Schar who was the only Newcastle defender that managed to not pick up a yellow card.

With this in mind, it’s safe to say Shelvey was Howe’s only shining light on this occasion in terms of individual performance.

Also, given how the newly appointed Newcastle manager previously said that he thinks Shelvey will be an “important” player for the Toon going forward, his performance today certainly backed that up.

Considering how Shelvey also managed to put in a solid display during Newcastle’s 3-3 draw against Brentford last weekend, it seems as though Howe’s arrival at St. James’ Park has revitalised the midfield man, which will be a big positive for everyone at the club.

Moving forward, with Newcastle’s next game putting them up against Norwich City in midweek, who are also fighting for their survival in the Premier League, if Shelvey can make it three impressive performances out of three and the players in front of him can get some goals while the defenders behind him can keep a clean sheet, this could give the team a great chance of picking up their win of the campaign.

West Ham fans criticise Fabianski display

A number of West Ham supporters have criticised Lukasz Fabianski’s performance in the Hammers’ Premier League clash away to Aston Villa.

David Moyes’s side started the day in fourth place in the Premier League, showing what an impressive start they have made to the season.

There was an added incentive going into the Villa game, with victory enough to take them level on points with reigning champions Manchester City, further highlighting their current fortunes.

The Hammers went into the interval 2-1 in front, with Ben Johnson and Declan Rice on target, but Fabianski will surely feel that he could have done better for Ollie Watkins’ equaliser in the first half, having been off-balance when the Villa striker shot. He did redeem himself somewhat with a fingertip save to deny the ex-Brentford marksman shortly before the hour mark.

Also, as per SofaScore, the Polish veteran had one of the lowest passing accuracy rates among the Irons’ players and lost possession on numerous occasions throughout the match.

Preview: Wolves XI vs Everton

Bruno Lage’s Wolverhampton Wanderers side head into Monday evening’s Premier League fixture on the back of falling to a disappointing last-minute 1-1 draw last time out, albeit while still in a decent run of form. Thus, the 45-year-old manager will undoubtedly be hoping for his side to get back to winning ways against Everton.

And, with the Toffees currently being on a run of three games without a win in the league, Lage will know that Monday’s fixture provides his team with a fantastic chance of securing another three points in order to propel his side towards the top half of the table.

So, will the Portuguese manager make any changes to the team which started in the 1-1 draw with Leeds last time out? Here’s how we think Wolves could line up against Everton, along with the latest team and injury news…

With it being confirmed that Fernando Marcal will once again miss out due to a calf injury, while Willy Boly is available for selection after recovering from illness, we predict that Lage will make four changes to the team which lined up against Leeds last weekend.

The first of these changes comes in the back three, with 31-year-old Romain Saiss dropping out of the side following a disappointing performance at Elland Road where he completed just 66% of his passes. Meanwhile the £46k-per-week Boly – who is in great need of more first-team minutes this season – comes in to replace the Morocco international.

There is another change in defence, with the £25.2m-rated Nelson Semedo making way for 19-year-old Ki-Jana Hoever, as the former clumsily gave away the last-minute penalty which ultimately cost his side two points against Leeds, while the latter is – like Boly – in need of more first-team minutes in order to continue his development.

In the middle of the park, Leander Dendoncker drops out of the XI, with the fit-again £37.8m-rated Ruben Neves starting alongside Joao Moutinho.

The front three also sees one change, with Daniel Podence being handed only his second start of the Premier League season, with Hee-Chan Hwang missing out, while Raul Jimenez retains his spot up top.
