Spinners wreak havoc at the Rose Bowl

Another 13 wickets fell on day three at the Rose Bowl and all but one of them to spin bowlers

22-Jul-2011
ScorecardAnother 13 wickets fell on day three at the Rose Bowl and all but one of them to spin bowlers as bottom-placed Hampshire took a perilous lead of 116 into the final day of their County Championship match against Nottinghamshire. The home side will now face an ECB pitch panel on Sunday with the prospect of a points deduction.Hampshire left-armer Danny Briggs took a season’s best 6 for 65 as Nottinghamshire were shot out for 183, providing Hampshire with a slender first-innings advantage of 30. Then Nottinghamshire spinner Samit Patel took the first five Hampshire second-innings wickets aided by a ring of close fielders as the pitch offered him as much turn as it had done Briggs. At the close Hampshire were 86 for 6 with opener and acting captain Jimmy Adams having held firm for 33 from 109 balls, out in the last over to medium-pacer Andre Adams. The first day of an intriguing and closely-fought match was washed out and on the second 13 wickets also fell, six of them to Nottinghamshire spinners Patel and Graeme White. The third day began with Nottinghamshire on 35 for 3 in response to Hampshire’s 213 in which Neil McKenzie used the experience gleaned from 58 Tests for South Africa to make an unbeaten 97. Briggs, one of the most promising young spinners in county cricket, made the first breakthrough when he had Adam Voges caught at short leg in his first over and Nottinghamshire never recovered.Patel and Voges put on 52 for the fourth wicket, which proved to be the highest stand of the innings. Patel followed at 101 leg before, and a similar fate befell Steven Mullaney and Chris Read.White provided some belligerent late resistance with a six and two fours in his 25 while Darren Pattinson also hit Briggs for six in his 17 not out but Briggs was not to be denied and removed White to a catch in the deep as Hampshire struggled to finish off the Nottinghamshire tail.Last man Charlie Shreck lasted two balls before giving another spinner Imran Tahir a return catch in the 82nd over.Hampshire needed to build on their narrow lead but fared no better second time around, losing Liam Dawson, Michael Carberry, James Vince, Sean Ervine and McKenzie, this time without scoring, with only 70 on the board. Patel proved hard to face, sending back Vince and Ervine to leg before decisions and removing the others to close catches.Hampshire were comfortable all the while Adams was there but he fell to his namesake with four balls remaining of the scheduled last over to swing the advantage back in Nottinghamshire’s direction. Patel ended the day with figures of 5 for 36, giving him nine wickets in the match so far, and leaving Hampshire in real danger of losing their sixth match of the season.

Gayle left out of squad to face India

Kieron Pollard is back in the West Indies side for the first two ODIs against India, but Chris Gayle remains out of favour after his controversial radio interview last month

Chris Gayle was the Player of the Tournament in the IPL, but is not being considered for the West Indies side•AFP

Chris Gayle remains out of favour with the West Indies Cricket board (WICB) after his controversial radio interview last month and has not been included in the squad for the Twenty20 game and the first two ODIs against India. Despite Gayle finishing as the leading run-getter in the IPL, the board has said it will not consider him for selection until it meets with him.Allrounder Kieron Pollard is back in the side for the first two ODIs, while the fast bowler Kemar Roach has been rested for the Trinidad leg of the series due to his heavy workload. The uncapped left-arm seamer Krishmar Santokie, of Jamaica, has been picked in the Twenty20 squad, which otherwise has no changes from the XI that beat Pakistan in St Lucia in April. Pollard and Dwayne Bravo could not be included in the Twenty20 outfit having not played in the most recent Caribbean Twenty20 tournament, which is part of the WICB selection criteria. The selectors were also unwilling to choose Gayle, who slammed the West Indies board on radio after he was not picked in the squad to take on Pakistan last month. In a statement naming the squad to face India, the WICB explained the omission of Gayle, who was named as the Player of the Tournament in the IPL.”Chris Gayle will not be considered for selection to the West Indies team before an intended meeting with himself, the selection committee, the WICB management and the West Indies team management,” the statement said. “The selection committee views this meeting as necessary as a result of Gayle’s comments in a widely publicised radio interview in Jamaica.”There was also no room for Jerome Taylor, who like Gayle claimed the WICB failed to contact him about how he was recovering from an injury until after he had departed for the IPL. The selection committee said in the statement that Taylor must play a full season of regional cricket to prove his fitness for international level. The opening batsman Adrian Barath has returned to low-intensity cricket in Trinidad but is still undergoing rehabilitation after suffering a serious hamstring injury before the World Cup, and it is expected he will be fit for the Tests against India. Following Saturday’s Twenty20 in Trinidad, West Indies and India play two ODIs there, before heading to Antigua to continue the series.Twenty20 squad: Lendl Simmons, Andre Fletcher (wk), Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Danza Hyatt, Darren Sammy (capt), Christopher Barnwell, Andre Russell, Ashley Nurse, Devendra Bishoo, Ravi Rampaul, Krishmar Santokie.Squad for first two ODIs: Lendl Simmons, Kirk Edwards, Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Darren Sammy (capt), Carlton Baugh (wk), Andre Russell, Anthony Martin, Devendra Bishoo, Ravi Rampaul.

Michael Carberry, the Hampshire opening batsman, has been ruled out of the England Performance Programme trip to Australia after suffering a blood clot in his lung. He has received treatment which has been successful but he can’t take long-haul flights following the illness.ESPNcricinfo understands that Carberry first felt the effects of the problem towards the end of last season when he started to suffer shortness of breath while batting and fielding. He was due to be part of the squad that will be based in Brisbane and Perth alongside the main Ashes party until shortly before Christmas. No replacement has been named to cover for Carberry’s absence.Carberry made his Test debut against Bangladesh in Chittagong where he scored 34 and 30 but hasn’t been able to add to his single cap.

Rest of India leave Mumbai with mammoth task

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Parthiv Patel’s 13th first-class century pushed Rest of India beyond 650•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Rest of India extended their advantage on the second day, leaving Mumbai with the mammoth task of having to surpass 668 to gain a potentially decisive first-innings lead. Though Dhawal Kulkarni struck with three early wickets, Parthiv Patel’s hundred and half-centuries from Virat Kohli and R Ashwin ensured the day belonged to Rest of India. There was hope early in the morning for Mumbai, after seamer Kulkarni dismissed Abhinav Mukund, S Badrinath and captain Yuvraj Singh in quick succession. Both seamers Kulkarni and Usman Malvi got some away movement outside the off stump.Kulkarni bowled a nagging length and had the left-handers in trouble with the angle from round the wicket. He got Mukund, who had looked a bit tentative, to edge an away-going delivery to gully in the ninth over of the day. Badrinath, meanwhile, had been pushed onto the back foot by the away movement. Four overs later, Kulkarni bowled Badrinath, six short of a hundred, as he played from the crease to a delivery that came in with the angle. Much was expected from Yuvraj, but he didn’t last long. In his next over, Kulkarni took out his middle stump with a fuller one from round the wicket; Yuvraj playing all around it from the crease. Rest of India, on 353 for 1 at one stage, were suddenly 367 for 4.But Kohli and Parthiv ensured the advantage didn’t slip, adding 158 for the fifth wicket at close to five runs an over. Kohli stuck mostly to the Sunil Gavaskar school of batting. Anything outside off was left alone with a monk’s discipline, and when the bowler pitched it straight or drifted onto his pads, he took full toll, driving gracefully and powerfully in the arc between extra cover and mid wicket. One over from Abhishek Nayar, about an hour before lunch, typified Kohli’s approach. The first ball was full, close to off stump, and was straight driven for four in a flash. The next four balls, wide outside off, were left alone. When Nayar pitched the last delivery fuller and closer to the stumps, he was hammered through extra cover. However, like Shikhar Dhawan on the first day, Kohli missed out on a hundred when in total control, hitting a Ramesh Powar long hop straight to midwicket on 90.If Kohli dominated against the seamers, Parthiv was all footwork against the spinners, welcoming Powar with consecutive boundaries. He went over the infield when they flighted the ball, rocked back to play the cut and pull when they dropped it short, and was quick to use his feet on most occasions. Fifteen of his 18 fours came against the spinners. One of them to the midwicket boundary off Iqbal Abdulla brought up his 13th first-class century. After Kohli fell, Parthiv and Ashwin compounded Mumbai’s misery with the fourth century-plus stand of the innings at almost a run-a-ball. Ashwin played with all the assurance of a batsman averaging in the late-30s in first-class cricket. He lofted and cut the spinners, and pulled the seamers for boundaries. He mixed the powerful shots with some deft late cuts and guides, getting to his seventh first-class half-century with one such steer to third man.Kulkarni returned to take two late wickets to finish with his seventh first-class five-wicket haul. But he sorely lacked support from the other bowlers, and had Ajit Agarkar been able to bowl (he didn’t take the field today because of dehydration), maybe the story could have been different for Mumbai.Their openers began well though, facing ten overs without any fuss. Mumbai will need a gargantuan batting effort to make anything out of this match.

Newcastle remain keen on Diego Carlos

An update has emerged on Newcastle United’s interest in Sevilla gem Diego Carlos…

What’s the talk?

According to Marca (via the Daily Express), the Magpies will make another attempt to sign the centre-back in the summer if they avoid relegation.

The report claims that an offer of £45m was turned down in January but only because the LaLiga outfit are in the hunt for the league title, and the Toon are now ready to splash the cash at the end of the season in a bid to land him this time around.

Imagine & Burn

Newcastle must seal a dream deal for Carlos in the summer as he could form an exciting defensive partnership with January’s addition Dan Burn.

The former Brighton man made his Magpies debut against Aston Villa on Sunday and was pivotal to his side keeping a clean sheet and picking up the three points. As per SofaScore, he made three clearances, one block and one interception, whilst only losing one individual duel in the entire match.

Including his time with the Seagulls, he has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.96 in the Premier League this term. This suggests that he is able to consistently deliver impressive performances at this level, which means that he could be a reliable figure for the club to depend on moving forward.

In Carlos, Newcastle could find the ideal partner for him. The Brazilian machine has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.14 in La Liga for Sevilla, winning 63% of his duels and making 3.6 clearances per game.

Spanish football analyst Domagoj Kostanjšak previously heaped praise on the defensive enforcer, saying:

“He’s a really physical player – he’s built like a tank and they don’t call him ‘The Beast’ for no reason. He’s really good in the air and he’s decent on the ball as well – you have to be under Julen Lopetegui.”

These comments suggest that he could be superb to watch as both of them are physical players who can impose themselves on the opposition. Carlos’ statistics also show that he is consistent and able to perform at the top level, much like Burn, and they could form a brick wall at the back for Eddie Howe next season.

This is why PIF must ensure that they are able to convince Sevilla to part ways with the Brazilian in the summer as he could be a terrific addition to the side.

Imagine him and Burn bullying centre-forwards in the Premier League throughout the 2022/23 campaign, where the Magpies will be looking to push on with their lofty ambitions.

Smith quits as Twenty20 captain

Graeme Smith has stepped down as South Africa’s Twenty20 captain with immediate effect and will give up the one-day leadership as well after the 2011 World Cup

Firdose Moonda17-Aug-2010Graeme Smith has stepped down as South Africa’s Twenty20 captain with immediate effect and will give up the one-day leadership as well after the 2011 World Cup. He will stay on as Test captain and is available for selection in all three formats. Smith announced his decision at a press conference in Johannesburg on Wednesday.”There are several reasons why I have made this important career decision,” Smith said. “I am going into my ninth season of international cricket – eight of which have been as captain. It is my intention to play for another five or six years and I know in my heart that I can only do that if I give up some of my current responsibilities.”Longevity was one of the main things on Smith’s mind during the South African off season, during which he, “set some challenging personal goals for the future.” He would only share a few of those aims, one of which is to “be around for much longer as a player,” and the other, to win a World Cup.Smith led South Africa in the 2007 edition of the ODI World Cup and in three World Twenty20s. The team failed to reach the final of any of those events, although they reached the semi-final stage twice. Speculation was rife that he would step down in May this year, after South Africa finished bottom of their Super Eights group at the World T20 in the Caribbean. The pressure of filling a barren trophy cabinet was expected to become too much and Smith fuelled the fire himself when he posted a cryptic message on Twitter on July 20. “Captaining South Africa is an honour and a privilege! And I’m so lucky to have had the opportunity. Thank you all for your support.” He confirmed that the idea of stepping down was “going through my head for a while,” but he did not isolate that tournament as the reason for this decision. The team’s Caribbean crusade was also the first full series Smith completed in 2010, after a string of arm and hand injuries forced him out of limited overs matches, such as during the India tour. He took no part in South Africa’s ODIs in Australia in the 2008-09 season because of a broken hand and a tennis elbow condition kept him out of another ODI series in 2008, against England. Johan Botha captained the team on those occasions.Despite being an absent captain in ODIs for much of the last two years, Smith dismissed the idea that the shuffling of the armband led to his decision. In fact, he felt his philosophies prevailed during those times. “My leadership style was to create an environment where the team could perform without me. There was never any problem when I returned. All the players were decent to me when I returned from injury and I just gelled back into captaincy.”Smith believes he created an ideal environment for other players to take on roles of responsibility. “It has always been my philosophy not only to make the Proteas [South Africa] the best team we can possibly be but also to enable the players to grow both as cricketers and as people. I believe we have now reached the stage where there are several players emerging within the squad to take on leadership roles.”It’s for this reason that Smith chose to make his announcement now and not closer to the World Cup. He hopes it will give the administrators and players enough time to prepare for a new leader. “It is absolutely vital that we maintain continuity in a World Cup season and this major competition also concludes the current cycle of limited overs cricket. I also feel that making the announcement now will provide the time and development necessary to ensure a smooth transition.”Gerald Majola, CEO of Cricket South Africa (CSA), who was present at the press conference, felt Smith had given the administrators enough time. “He is leaving us when there are youngsters who can take up a leadership role, he is not leaving us in the lurch.” Majola said CSA have been working on a succession plan for a while and they will announce the new Twenty20 captain next month. The frontrunners for the job are Botha in the ODI role and AB de Villiers for T20s. Smith refused to comment on who he thought should take over but he did say that he would be willing to work with whoever was selected. Just like Shaun Pollock, who played under Smith after being stripped of the captaincy, Smith said he will play under a new captain without interfering. “I think it’s very important to allow a person to find his feet and grow. I would like to add value because I think a senior player’s role is a crucial one. I took over at a young age and Polly still played in the team and we were able to form a good relationship, so I learnt from a good man.”He has already demonstrated his ability to play under someone else. During the IPL, Smith played for the Rajasthan Royals under Shane Warne with much success. Smith’s stepping down from the captaincy role in Twenty20s in unlikely to have an impact on, or be connected to, his appearance in the cash-rich league, but Smith left the door open for any possibility. “I don’t know (about the IPL). We don’t know what’s going to happen with the IPL in future, but all I’ll say is that I am committed to South Africa.”

NUFC: Predicted XI to face Aston Villa

Newcastle United have the chance to make it three wins from three in the Premier League as they host Aston Villa at St James’ Park this afternoon.

The Magpies have won their last two top-flight outings against Everton and Leeds to propel themselves out of the bottom three going into the weekend’s action.

They beat the Toffees 3-1 in their last match as an own goal from Mason Holgate and strikes from Ryan Fraser and Kieran Trippier sealed the three points.

How many changes will Howe make to the team for today? Here is our predicted XI…

We are predicting that he will make three alterations to the side from midweek, with Dan Burn, Javier Manquillo and Bruno Guimaraes all coming in.

Kieran Trippier could miss out at right-back after suffering a knock in midweek, with Howe stating: “We don’t think it’s long-term but we have to make a late call. It would be a big blow to lose him. He’s been key in our uplift, I can’t speak highly enough of him.”

This opens up a place at right-back and Manquillo could come in to fill it. Jacob Murphy is also an option for the Magpies, but his pace in the final third could be useful off the bench in the second half if Newcastle need to inject some urgency into their game, which is why the Spaniard could get the nod if Trippier is unavailable to play.

On the other side of the back four, the left-back position is also vacant. Matt Targett is ineligible to play against his parent club and we are predicting that Dan Burn will be handed his Toon debut. He has played at left-back before while at Brighton and is virtually the only option for Howe in that slot, with Paul Dummett, Matt Ritchie and Targett all out.

The £20k-per-week colossus has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.96 in the Premier League this season. This shows that he is a reliable performer at this level and has the quality to slot straight into the team, which means that he could do a solid job at left-back today.

Finally, we are predicting that Guimaraes will make his full debut for the club in midfield in place of Jonjo Shelvey. Whilst this may be harsh on the ex-Liverpool man, it could be an exciting moment for Newcastle fans to see the Brazilian play from the start.

He came on in stoppage time against Everton and created one big chance, won two duels and completed his only dribble attempt, as per SofaScore. If he can do all of that in the space of a few minutes, imagine what he could do in a full match against Villa. Howe may want to see what the 24-year-old can do whilst in the starting XI and that is why we are predicting him to start today.
